Can anyone tell me how serious the recent SUNTRACS rioting and protests are. I've been following the story via Panama-Guide.com and I'm somewhat concerned for safety. I'm planning my trip to Panama in a few weeks and just want to know the 411 from anyone here in the know. Much appreciated in advance.
Hey Bellepoque, almost anything can happen in this type of situation? This is NOT some major uprising of the country, no militancy. This country has open protests fairly frequently although it usually is not this physical. But this is not over with yet, more love to come out of this situation from my understanding. Road from PTY airport has been closed several times.
As far as I know it is really safe to travel to Panama, as it is a peaceful place without this kind of problem always. The people are polite there too.
When it comes to Panama City dont kid yourself. Granted, for a city of it's size it is fairly peaceful but people here do get mugged, raped, and killed. There are Colombian drug dealers and killers on the streets of Panama City. As I was leaving Carnival late one evening my girlfriend and I wound up sharing a cab with a woman that just had her purse stolen because she was by herself and an easy target. For the most part it is not bad but do take care.
Many thanks for the input...I am leaving for Panama tomorrow from NYC and am very much looking forward to discovering this new and exciting land. I'll be visiting for about three weeks. More later.
