CenRut is a community-based project to create and freely distribute GPS maps of Central America. The project covers Panama, Costa Rica, Belize, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala and Honduras.


Cenrut 2.7 contains 234,277 Km of roads and trails and 81,361 points of interest.

Sounds interesting. Traditionally, gps maps of Central America suck. I'm going to spend some time looking at the materials. Thanks for the post.

I have a Garmin GPS and when I inquired, they told me they had no availability for Panama, just maps. Is there anyone out there using a Garmin GPS and is the info I received true? Just maps?

I use PTY GPS Home. I wouldn't try driving in PC without it.

That's the best, although Google Navigation on an android phone or perhaps CenRut are possible. I agree, don't drive PC without something.

Yes and it looks very interesting. What model Garmin's are known to work? I have a Garmin that I use in the US and don't want to put more stuff on it. Last time I did, it got all screwed up. I'd buy a cheap Garmin or used one from Amazon or ebay but want to make sure I get one that is compatible. Some of the Garmins say US Only and I don't know if that means they won't take additional map data or what.

Pretty much any Garmin will work. For example, drivers can use all the Nuvi line(I just bought a Nuvi 1370), and hikers can use the Garmin 62S, etc.

The only real Garmin units that cannot use Cenrut are the VERY old units(eg- Garmin 12XL).

Does CenRut work like a normal Garmin where I have maps, directions, and audio directions? Or is it just maps?

Yes, Cenrut is a fully routable map. Once you load it onto your GPS, it will guide you to your destination turn-by-turn with audio directions.

I'd like to put it on a Garmin. I'd buy a used unit off ebay or amazon but would appreciate some guidance regarding which units will work...or will they all? Some of the Garmins are labeled as US and I wonder if they will accept other maps. Some of the Garmins say US and Hawaii. I've used other GPS units in Central America but the maps were terrible. This looks very promisinig and (to me) worth the price of a dedicated Garmin.

Wow, I like the enthusiasm! Instructions are on the link on the first post (I suggest installing Mapsource).

Pretty much all the Garmin units will work. If they say "US and Hawaii" or "Europe", it refers to the set of maps that are pre-loaded. Any of those will take the Cenrut maps (the only exceptions are very old units, such as the Garmin 12XL).
