Thread: International phone calling

Does anyone out there know the best way to call internationally? I have checked PennyTalk but there are some bad reviews on it. We want to call Robert and Isabell in Pedasi to book our room with them but have no way of calling them at this time. Any service out there that is the least expensive without fraud?

Buy a phone card from Walmart or your gas station.

We have been using Startec for several years now. To call Panama it's only 7 cents a minute to call cell phones and 5 cents a minute for land lines. A call will get dropped every now and then, but for 7 cents a minute - it is worth it.

That's a good rate - I use google voice and it's US $.15/min to call Panama from the US. Skype-out is more and usually lower quality.

Right on. Thanks for all these ideas. I looked at Startec, TennVoll, but they seem to be more per min with the same .50 connection charge than Pennytalk. It appears that the reviews on Pennytalk is bad only if you get involved with buying the card over the internet and filling it the same way. We can buy it at Wally World without the internet hassle. It cost .01 per min to call from panama to the US. It cost .02 to call from the US to Panama. Or vice versa. .99 per month for service and of course, .50 connect fee. That isnt too shabby. I dont know if StarTec can beat that. We'll see. The only amt we would lose is $25-30 if we regret it.
I was wondering about "google voice" like Jonr suggested. I already have it but didnt know that a person could use it between countries. This is good to know that we could use it also as a means of communication. I have never been a fan of Skype. Wont be using it.

MagicJack works and it is a great deal. You do need a computer and cheap phone to plug into the magicjack device.

I never thought much about MagicJack here. They sell them but they do not work up here in Northern Idaho. I will certainly check out this option. Thanks!

They are internet based. Do you have internet in Northern Idaho?

hehehe! Yes, we have internet in Northern Idaho. I called MJ a couple years back and they said that It was not in our area yet. I dont know of anyone up here that uses it. I will look them up again and see.

We found out that we can just use our Vonage to call down there. Had international but didnt even know it. So will pick up a MJack to take down with us. We were concerned that there was no highspeed internet to run it in Pedasi. Do you know if Robert and Isabelle have high speed at their place?
