(1) How far is it from the Panama City?
(2) Is it safe to visit the area (Since it is near Colombian border)?
(3) Do organized tours exist to Darien?
I have heard that Darien NP is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and it is abundant in wildlife. I hope to catch a glimpse of the fauna which includes Jaguars, Tapirs, Macaws and Harpy Eagles.
The Darien unfortunately borders Columbia and is a great hiding place for militant Columbian rebels who fund their activities through kidnappings and drug related activities. So when you hear of the dangers of the Darien this is the issue and no road runs through it to connect the 2 countries; probably a good thing.
However the Darien is safe but only with a good guide and in certain parts but most say it is well worth the visit. It's probably as safe as the big cities we travel through to go anywhere. For us it was Miami to get here!
Have a look on my site for a Darien trip and other adventure options and if you don't see one that suits you just email what your time frame is and I will personally set it up for you. We are still in the process of organizing some new and original packages so it would be helpful if you let me know what you decide either way. That will help us decide what to offer on the future.
It takes a few hours to drive to the Darien from Panama City but it is possible to fly in also.
Since Darien National Park is quite far from Panama city, the best way to get there is to fly by air to El Real since thats the closest town to the park. But if you want to be adventurous, you can drive till Yaviza and take a boat from there. No matter what mode of traveling you choose, one thing is sure that you will definitely enjoy the beauty of the place.
I am thinking about the trip... but since I have heard about the Colombian rebels hiding there, I think it is a bit risky. I have heard a lot about Western tourists being kidnapped by the Colombian rebels. I was planning to travel alone. But that seems impossible.
I read on the thread that Darien is a bit of a risky place to go to. I didn't know that they really do kidnap people if they chance upon you. That sounds a bit scary.
It's always good to travel with someone, it's safer that way. Plus you can take turns taking photos of each other haha!
