What is interesting is the effect on market price in various areas and of course availability.

The effect is very low. I think I read 20-25 % in street price for the drugs they combat.

What is the overall result? People use home-made meth instead and pay just a hair more for an occational "luxury".

I read that a Colombia farmer is paid about 1,000 bucks for a kilo, which would run you 100,000 bucks in the US.

With such extreme margins I wonder if the drug lords have even considered streamlining and diversifying their distribution networks, renegotiate with their suppliers, implement fuel effciency efforts?

It truly is just another commodity. Just a little more dangerous to transport and sell, hence the profit margin.

I watched a documentary on Afghanistan about 15 years back, and the local farmers were getting $25 a kilo for heroin back then, and they were really happy to get that since there other crops only paid about $.20 to $.70 a kilo, so for them it was a windfall.

Not sure what it would be nowadays...

Here is some interesting articles on how the Colombian cartel is using and building there own submarines now to ship drugs..

Lol, the cartels need some better management and need to start hiring people with business degrees. I actually would not doubt they probably do have people with biz degrees from good colleges working for them. From what I understand coke is children's aspirin compared to meth. Meth is some pretty self-destructive stuff and the process creates a toxic waste dump when created. Just because the drug is available doesn't mean everybody is going to turn into a junkie. If somebody wants to put chemicals into their system (including booze and cigarettes) no law is going to stop them.

just my thought , if you really want to slow down drug use they could try this . in canada we have a program called workers compensation , everyone that works has to be covered by there employer ,it was set up years ago to protect the company ,from lawsuits from injured workers and the employee to see that they do not suffer any losses from being hurt , they pay al the medical bills and 70% of the wage with no income tax taken , so for just about everyone they get the same pay check , the premiums are paid by the employer , and it works good for both partys , now if they gave them power to do random piss tests and anyone who fails or refused to do it ,there coverage would stop ,therefore the company would fire them as you can not have someone working for you that is not covered ,it would get rid of a lot of donny dopers , as they would have to decide to feed there family and pay the rent or do drugs .now this will not stop most of it ,but it will stop lots ,and as a business owner i would welcome this with open arms as a doped up employee is a great risk to your companys saftey . operating machinery ,driving company trucks , etc . and the buisness owner should have to do the same test also .
