La Prensa - Revenge arises as a possible motive in the homicide of lawyer Manuel Caballero, who was shot in the head this Saturday morning and died hours later in the Metropolitan Social Security Hospital Complex. Judicial sources indicate they are trying to determine if this attack bears any relation to the activities Caballero realized as a lawyer, who was dedicated to the buying and selling of property and land. In fact, sources added that the lawyer was actually involved in 45 different deals worth some $10 million dollars, several of them with foreigners. Caballero died of heart failure after having been operated on by doctors at the Social Security hospital. Preliminary versions indicate he was shot from a moving car as he left the Fan Clean laundry near Via Argentina in El Cangrejo. (Photo Credit: LA PRENSA/Edwards Santos)
Editor's Comment: Here's what caught my attention. Lawyers tend to fall into niches - they specialize in one kind of work and then develop a client base. It seems this lawyer, Manuel Antonio Caballero Pérez, had developed a niche as a real estate lawyer. When I did some basic checking on the guy he only turned up as having handled a few cases in immigration. As a matter of fact he has handled only five clients for immigration since 28 December 2005, and in fact he was not very good at it. He did one Nicaraguan in 2005 (no status given.) On the same date he applied for a Dominican woman (denied), then on 20 August 2007 he applied for two women, one Dominican and one Colombian (both denied.) Now, interestingly, he applied for the same Colombian woman (ANA CLAUDIA ALVAREZ ORTEGA) again on 17 April 2008, and that request was again denied. Now, I have no idea if this lawyer's failures in the offices of immigration bear any relation to his demise but the timing is interesting. In any case, he was not an "immigration" lawyer.
