Now (At Least) Ten Running for Mayor of Panama City

By José González Pinilla for La Prensa - There are now ten people who aspire to be the next Mayor of Panama City as internal party primary elections approach. Panameñista Jose Terán, former Health Minister, formalized his ambitions on Saturday to preside over the Municipality of Panama City which has an annual budget of $80 million dollars. Also running for the Panameñista party are Bosco Vallarino and Pedro Collins. Luis Eduardo Camacho, who also said he intended to run, has since decided against. For the Nationalist Republican Liberal Movement (Molirena) Julio Crespo, the former Representative of Bella Vista, is running. For the Partido Revolucionario Democratico (PRD) Roberto Velasquez Abood and Noel Riande are running. Carlos Arosemena y Sergio Gálvez will fight it out in a primary in the Cambio Democratico primary in August. University professor Miguel Antonio Bernal is running on the "Moral Vanguard of the Motherland" ticket. Businessman Iván Blasser is running with the Union Patriotica party. Former Mayor Mayín Correa said yesterday she still has not decided whether or not to run on the CD ticket. Elias Castillo is in the same position with the PRD.
Editor's Comment: What? I thought Elias Castillo had entered the race for the PRD. If not, then that's a (very) good thing for Roberto Velasquez Abood. As soon as Balbina Herrera decided to run for President, then the flood gates opened up to hopefuls. Balbina would have basically been a walk-on to the Mayor's office, and (personally) I think she screwed up by going for the big chair one season too soon. A run in the Mayor's office would have better prepared her for the presidency. Whatever. So far, if Elias Castillo stays out, it looks like it will come down to Velasquez and Bosco Vallarino. All those other dudes have no real shot. Hey, maybe I should run...
