powerboat-world.com - 'Spaceship Earthrace in Panama' The Panama Canal Authority has just confirmed the Round the World record powerboat racer Earthrace will be starting her Canal transit at eight thirty local time. Skipper Pete Bethune commented ‘We appreciate everyone's cooperation. It is peak season here now, and there is a huge backlog of boats waiting to get through. As we came into Panama on the Caribbean side on the way in, we could see them all anchored up a few miles offshore, diligently waiting on their time to enter. Early reports had indicated there was local industrial action. However the Panama Canal Authority has advised that the information was incorrect. Recent lock maintenance work and a particularly high peak in seasonal traffic have combined to cause the overall delays and the Canal Authority is working hard to speed transit times. Its now Day 12 of the 2008 Earthrace RTW record attempt and the boat has so far covered 4970nm. She is racing to beat the 1998 speed record of 74 days 23 hours and 53 minutes. GPS Location: 09 22.104N, 79 57.078W Earthrace arrives in Shelter Bay Marina - Panama -
