Did Panama ever have a military?

Panama doesn't have a military, I believe. Has it always been this way? How long has Panama not had a military?

Wow, Panama just recently got rid of their military. I hope that a military never comes back. I think it is good for a country not to have a military.

The official CIA website says that Panama does not have a military force. Since 1990, forming a military force has been prohibited. Specialized police units might be formed to deal with acts of "external aggression"

I didn't know Panama doesn't have military forces, not sure if that's a good idea or not but I think these days it's more up to the kind of weapons you have rather then how many people. There's something I don't understand thou, what do you mean "they were prohibited to have military"? Who can prohibit Panama to have military forces? That doesn't sound alright.

I think it's own government imposed that in order to prevent warfare. I'm sure they have some nice treaties though to protect them in case of attack. I know the US would probably back them at 100% due to the canal.

So they have one reliable ally.

That's true, their position it's so valuable that probably there is no need to engage in any war... others would know better then attack them. On the other hand, US's military is so spread out at the moment that it would be very difficult to engage in another war.

Yep, but if they did attack the military base over there, the US would definitely get involved.

Although at the moment I don't see any other nations messing with Panama so they should be safe, the US on the other hand I can't say the same unfortunately.
