I forgot to add that I just walked in. Banks really WANT a lawyer to do the introduction because in their minds it provides another level of proof. The lawyer is supposed to make sure their client's money is clean (otherwise, they can get in deep trouble). Also, when I walked into Metrobank without a lawyer -- they basically said: "What are you doing here without a lawyer".
And then said "We no longer accept any foreigners."

I will be trying again with my lawyer soon. It will be interesting to see how different things are.

    Matt

You guys all US or Canadian citizens, right? Then, I guess, anywhere in the world it would be more difficult. I bet your nationality is the key. After what US did to UBS the real off-shore banking is over. It is a shame... All right, wait until I get there, soon ... I discovered that there are like 4 Ecuadorian banks in Panama, only 1 has 2 branches, but anyhow they are in Panama... Account opening from Ecuador is quick and easy. I will opt for that if my attempts in Panama are unsuccessful. But, I can't miss Ed eating all the shoes... where was it, Ed, in all Panama?

    I am from northern Europe.

Yes, as promised, if you can open an account with a passport, second ID and one bank reference letter I will eat all shoes that are in my building.

    Best, Ed

All right, Ed, you won... I didn't open an account. I went to see the very same person in Citi I talked to on the phone and he shamelessly informed me that they just changed the policy (2 days ago) and don't open accounts for foreigners anymore. Scotiabank - was not so bad, although they asked for 1 local Panamanian reference, which I could get, but... I decided to open an account with Banco Pichincha - an Ecuadorian bank in Panama: I can do it from Ecuador. I can deposit, withdraw, wire - all from Ecuador.
Another thing: what's up with Panamanian cops?? What is it: a quick self-made road tax? I'll open another topic for that...
