The city probably has more crime than the rest of the country. Overall Panama has less crime than most of the rest of the world. This province is big, so it really depends on the specific neighborhood.

I 100% agree with tallman. In my experience Panama is one of the "less crime" countries of Latin America.

It should be noted that there is crime no matter where you go. It is just a matter of degree. You still have to use common sense to avoid getting victimized.

Panama has much less crime compared to countries like Brazil. In Panama, one may face petty crimes like snatching or a street child running with your valuables etc. But major crimes like drug trafficking , gang wars or rape is much less.

Actually drug trafficking is a major industry here but everything else I agree with.

I beg to differ with the item I highlighted in your post. Other than that, it's reasonable...

I think there is less crime because there are crooked cops.

Is it safe to just carry around your mobile phone and use it while you are walking in the streets? In my country, there are cities that are not really safe for using mobile phones in the streets. It might be snatched by those lazy people.

Everybody's got cell phones stuck in their ears, so you'll blend right in. I wouldn't go around flashing too many cameras in El Chorrillo, however...

Crime rate in Panama is much lower than Colombia and Brazil. At the same time it is a little bit higher than that of Costa Rica and Uruguay. All this said.. I never had any bitter experience when I was in Panama.
