    newbie

Hello All, I'm new to the site. My husband and I are interested in visiting Panama to consider it's retirement possibilities, planning arriving mid January. I understand this is the tourist season and with carnaval will there be a shortage of accomodations?

Carnival does not fall until March in 2011. So you should not have a problem.

Good Question. I am planning another "boots on the ground" inspection of the relocation possibilities in late winter or early spring. What are the potential pitfalls of coming during Carnival?

I have only been in Panama for 1 Carnival, and that was last year in Las Tablas. I am sure there are many that have much more experience than I. First of all what I am about to relate, do not see as a negative, as carnival is a geat deal of fun and something to experience. That being said, accomadations will no doubt be more exspensive and not as readily available. Traffic will be increased. The trip from the city into and returning from Las Tablas is congested with traffic. During that trip they have several DUI check points set up, so there will be waits and checks. If you will be to your destination prior to the start of and do not have to drive, so much the better. If you are coming to check out the "area" , then maybe you wouldnt want to do it during carnival. Unless of course you have enough time to be there before and/or after and you can experience it all.

Yes I understand. I hope enjoy Carnivals in Panama & Colombia in the futere. But not the best time for leg work regarding re-loction from the States. What are the dates of Carnival In PTY this year?

    Re: newbie

The dates for carnival is pretty much the same anywhere in the world that recognizes Easter as a holiday. (Think Marti Gras) Carnival is 40 days before Easter. In 2011, the four day carnival celebration will be from March 5th through March 8th.
When you're ready for the big experience, you'll need to know when it will be! You'll find the big day can fall on any Tuesday between February 3 and March 9. Carnival celebration starts on January 6, the Twelfth Night (feast of Epiphany); and picks up speed until Midnight on Mardi Gras, the day before Ash Wednesday.
How will you know which Tuesday it will be? Ash Wednesday is always 46 days before Easter and Fat Tuesday is always the day before Ash Wednesday. Easter can fall on any Sunday from March 23 to April 25 with the exact date to coincide with the first Sunday after the full moon following a Spring Equinox! There you have it! Voila!
    Simple...eh.
