    Newbie

Hello everyone, My wife and I are planing on moving to Panama in 5 yrs. looking to meet some nice people there, and being led into the right direction. Not sure where we want to end up in yet, but have a few places in mind. It's hard to pick just one spot in a beautiful country. But anyways just thought I would Introduce us and hoping we can keep in contact with some people before we get there and learn more!!!!

You can drive from Panama City to Costa Rica and back in one day so just wing it and see what happens.

Yeah we will be looking around, just wondering if someone has opinions. I read some where that there is a bus/buses that run down there to, thats the way that we might go instead of driving, but we'll see.

Yes, but then it would take 3 days and you wouldn't see anything. It won't be much more expensive to have a car for the days you are exploring. The locals can rent cars for $20 a day all-inclusive.

This country is very easy and cheap to get around by bus and taxis are cheap everywhere. I get around the country all the time by bus and really it is no big deal. When you start figuring in insurance and gas the rental car is not that cheap.

Yeah good point about the insurance and gas! I think we might be going to the bus way.

The bus generally does not take even that much longer to make it worthwhile to rent a car. It is nice to have the freedom of driving your own set of wheels but buses are very frequent. You can get to Las Tablas on a nice, new, large, bus for $8 direct from Panama City. Time will be about 4.5 hours. Once you get there taxis are cheap. You can travel further to Pedasi in 1.25 hrs for an extra $2.

Th is why I'm so glad I found this form, the good info I can get. Thanks again! Yeah taking the bus, I think would be worthwhile, cause we can meet even more people on the ride. 4.5 hrs there isn't all that bad.

    Re: Newbie

There are many expats that live in the countryside, that own cars, that take the bus into the city just because they don't want to deal with the madness of getting in and out. If you know some Spanish it is a great opportunity to talk with locals and get an understanding of the people of Panama. As long as you are in decent physical shape and don't have to frequent the bathroom you really cannot beat the bus system in Panama.

The bus is the way to go, for sure. But what about if we want to rent a car after we get there. Is there car rentals in las Tablas? The ones we found look to be a bit shady. Anyone know about car rentals?
    thanks

You should be able to rent a car in Chitre, no problems. Chitre is only 30+ Kms away from Las Tablas. If you plan to head to Chiriqui you will find plenty of rentals in David.

We were planning on renting a car in Pamama city to come over to Pedasi. Now we might just take the bus and rent after arriving there. Could you tell me exactly where this bus stops in relation to car rentals and Pedasi. In other words, what is the closest town to Pedasi that has rentals and the bus stops at? Is it Chitre? Tablas? China? haha!

Not to worry, you will not be getting lost. There are many taxis at the bus terminal in Chitre. You will be able to get to your car rental company for less than $2.00 (USD). I also know some rental companies will come and pick you up. Just make your car reservation in Chitre in advance. Keep in mind this is a small country and locals on the Azuero are generally pretty darn friendly and helpful. You can always ask and people will usually go out of their way to help you (as long as you are smiling and polite as possible).

Right on Woo, Will do. Now if we can just shovel our way out of the snow to get there, we'll be set!
Say, off the subject, but what does a root canal cost down there, do you know? Lee just came home from the dentist and he needs one. Even with insurance, it will run us close to $600. Any less expensive down there? We would like to set up a doctor and dentist when we come down next month. Does Chitre offer this and is it the closest to Pedasi? I know that Pedasi is getting a hospital but what about a dentist?
Thanks for being so faithful to answer all of us, MRWOOHOO.

I know I had a quote for over 1,000 dollars in the US for some dental work and paid $115 here.

It is going to be much less for root canal. I do know of a good dentist in Chitre. The only type of dentist in Pedasi has little more than a pair of pliers. Let me find the phone number.

I was told by my lawyer in Las Tablas that there is a good dentist / orthodontic office in Las Tablas but I'm not sure where. Apparently they can do anything...braces, root canals, implants etc.
