I'm not sure if it's because I'm almost totally computer illiterate or the internet can't penetrate the snow up here, but my reply to this thread hasn't gone thru twice. Anyway Thanks to Mr.W, Pollerkeeper, and mudshark for info. Mudshark, I am from Mackay, ID, 6100', which is at the base of Mount Borah and $2000/month east of Sun Valley. I will be exploring Panama as soon as the SS checks start in March. Cheers!! or WOOF!! or whatever to the gang at Oceanos.
Weather Advisory: I advise you to stay south as long as possible.

I feel your pain. I live in Colorado Springs, at 6100' at the base of Pikes Peak. We are about the same amount of money east of Aspen! We hope to get the heck of the States soon and head South and get all these below zero temps behind us!

    Nine months of winter
    Three months of fall
    One day of summer
    And no spring at all

FYI:I discovered Las Tablas in a national magazine article about the best places to retire abroad last summer. It is now being touted in other retirement articles, including the best places in Panama by International Living ("Houses for rent on the beach for $250/month). Sometime back I rented a room on the beach in Puerto Vallarta for $21/week. At the same time I couldn't find a place to stay in Cancun because Cancun didn't exist. If your my age you've seen some the most remotest and God forsaken parts of the US overrun by the Richer and Famouser. Be pro-active. Start talking about the Tarantulas, Poisonous Snakes, and Lack of Good Help in the area. Peace.

Hoping it didn't rain that one day. Las Tablas is nice . We'll adjust to the heat, especially when I think of the other option. But it is hot and humid. We are glad we came here and we like the people, they are nice, even the expats. Nice to meet you mr whoohoo and pollerkeeper. Pedasi is OK, but I think we'll head back to Las Tablas and base our journey from there. See you at Oceano's Sun.

It was great hanging out with you folks yesterday. Pedasi is a nice place but still a little slow unless you are surfing. Give it a few more years and there will be enough development and foreign nationals to get things more active. I know several people that originally moved to Pedasi only to move up to Las Tablas. Look forward to seeing you folks this weekend. Look forward to the pics.

Well folks we are back from our house in Las Tablas. For those we got to meet, glad to have the oppurtunity, for those we didnt, next time.
It is amazing the changes I have seen in just a years time. Certainly the area is growing and with the new four lane Hwy. going in , I beleive it will bust the penninsula wide open. When I first traveled there about 5 years ago, you didnt run into many that spoke english. Now there wasnt a day I didnt run into several people. I sat in the resturaunt watching half the people in there either talking or texting on cell phones. The traffic is noticiably increased. The town is awash in taxi's.

For those that might have a hankering for hot dogs, heres a tip. That chewy natural casing, isnt a casing at all. Seems they wrap all the dogs indivdualy in plastic.

Cant wait for the next trip !

Las Tablas is definitely growing in terms of investment in the city. One can drive around the nooks and crannies and see things going on-not just work going on in preparation for the carnival. There is projects going on now in the city. People are improving buildings and building new buildings. I have no idea what is driving this investment, but it is noticeable. I am not noticing much going on with housing actually. And, the house market remains tight. There are homes for sale, but in the general vicinity of Las Tablas they don't seem like a bargain anymore. Prices are going up for lots and homes. I am seeing rental asking prices that seem high in the city as well. The people here are anxious for prosperity but I don't think it will come as fast as they want. There is some dreaming going on I think that will calm down when hopes are dashed and reality sets in. Just my opinion.
