MRWOOHOO Just moved to Panama
Hello to all, I have made it to Panama. I spent 7 years investigating Latin America, decided on Panama, and made it. Last nite my beautiful local Panamanian girlfriend and I were at Carnival, what a great time. I am now in my third day and have no regrets. Best of luck to all that are going to make the move, you can do it.
Cheers

Congrats! I've only been here for a month now, but I can already tell it's an amazing place to live. Where in Panama did you end up settling down? Did you do Carnival in Las Tablas? It was amazing.

So glad you made in down! You were most helpful to me with my move from Canada last December. Thanks again. Where did you end up? If you're ever in Boquete, give me a shout.

The Group Needs More of This
Congratulations on your move. Apparently your having a good time,Thumbs Up !!
I agree with the others, after you get settled down keep the rest of us informed. Especially about everyday life.My wife and I have already discussed moving in a few years to someplace like Costa Rico or Panama. In fact we are planning a vacation with the intent of scoping out our future retirement home. For now it looks like Panama has been moved to the top of the list.

Hello Everybody, thank you for all of the kind words. I currently am in Panama City and made it in time for Carnival, it was a pretty good party on the street. My girlfriend was waiting at the airport (at 3am, thank goodness) and everything is going well. Currently I am in El Dorado and I plan to stay here for awhile at least. I have already met with other ex-pats and everybody seems happy that they made the move. If anybody ever wants to get together feel free to contact.
Cheers

Hey Folks, my best wishes to you and your mother apaknad. My father has Parkinson's and I see what happens with terminal problems. But life still needs to continue forward and as long as we keep looking to move forward we are not falling behind. I have a full-time girlfriend that I enjoy being with so there are plenty of women for everybody including the more mature guys (chuckle). I walked across the city yesterday from Niko's cafe in El Dorado to Punta Patillia. Quick advice to any fair-skinned people out there, make sure you have sunscreen and a good wide-brimmed hat. I made the walk during the day, no problems, always look out for cars and say hello to people. Another thing I accomplished is getting my but back into the gym. I got a membership at Power Club gym in El Dorado. Three months for $170 and $50 up front plus tax. Good at all 4 locations. Time to undo what sitting at a computer desk for over 12 years and eating chocolate. I will keep this thread going as an interactive journal. Feel free to post questions, I will answer as much as possible.

MRWOOHOO,
Curious about what you are doing in Panama for $$. Are you 'pensionado'?
Thanks,
Javi

LOL, I always get a kick out of this question. I currently sell boot-leg cds and produce in the middle of the street and compete with the locals. Just kidding, I am only 39 and I sold my condo in Florida back last August and still managed to make money on it, thank goodness. I have turned into a bit of a real estate investor and have also started a corporation. My last job dealt with property management/accounting software. I can do billing and track payments, print statements, coupon books, form letters, etc. I hope the real estate investment works out and I will concentrate on that. In the mean time I am going to the gym and trying to learn Spanish.

Everybody back in the US always wanted to know "Who am I going to work for"? This is not a place you move to and hope you find a job working for somebody. Not unless you plan to be broke. I am also enjoying the company of my very cute 27 yr old Panamanian girlfriend.

I know the cost of living is less in Panama than pretty much anywhere in the USA, correct? If so, what would be a comparable income of $50K/year in the US to that of Panama? Here's what I'm thinking: if I had $50K/year in the US, would I be able to live in a similar manner with an income of $25K of income in Panama? This would, of course, be a rough estimate.
MRWOOHOO: If you don't mind, can you give us a general range of your income in the US and what you expect to be making (eventually) in Panama?

Thanks again folks, also big thanks to Don Winner and Panama-guide.com for mentioning the crazy protests on Balboa Ave this morning. I actually turned on the news because of reading the article this morning in Panamaforum about the construction workers and police officers going at it. Holy Crap!!!!!! I saw video footage in front of million-dollar condos in probably one of the most expensive areas of the city and workers and cops were going at it. At one point it almost looked like the workers were going to grab a cop driving a police vehicle, pull him out, and stone him to death. I wonder how this affects property value in the city? All I will say is they had better work things out because stuff like that makes me never want to own anything in Panama City. Lets hope it is safe to leave the El Dorado area tomorrow.
Peace
