Thread: Altos del Maria trip

Today took a trip to ADM in the afternoon to scout the place up. The road leading up is beautiful and will pop your ears more than once. Once arriving to the gates you are facing 30+degree slopes and inclines with a few sharp turns to spice things up should you be bored. The place is breath taking both in the esthetical sense and literally being so high up. It is a perfect place to get away to on a weekend but hardly somewhere you can live with children as a daily commute to anywhere let it be a store or school will require at least an hour of going up and down on double black diamond grade roads four times a day. I bet I would need new brakes every three months not to mention the amount of fuel needed to climb K2 on the daily basis would be astounding. It is a wilderness and if I get old and rich where I can have people runing my errands I will buy a place up there.
I saw a small and shitty food store a bit down from the entrance but that was about it. From inside the community depending which part you are at it may take half an hour to make it to the gates. From there about 45 mins to Coronado where decent stores are found.
In any case if they figure out to beam people around a'la Star Trek I might change my mind about moving there. Since El Valle is right next door I expect it to be pretty much the same proposition but will drive up there tomorrow. I wish there was a place with a mountain environment that was a bit easier to get to and closer to schools and stores.
Maybe Boquette or Penome? Maybe Cerro Azul?

Your assessment of Altos del Maria is spot on. Too far from amenities including the hospital for emergencies. Just to drive to the entrance gate seems to take forever going up and down in first gear. El Valle has many stores and restaurants, a much better choice. Consider La Laguna only 20 minutes from Coronado. No amenities up there also, but the trek to Coronado is short. Penonome is not highlands and therefore hot. You need to go past La Pintada to get any elevation or 30 minutes out. Boquete, like El Valle has a lot of amenities nearby and may be a good choice for you. Good luck with your search.

I don't mind going down double black diamonds on skis. It sounds like people buy a house up there, go for walks, read a few books and hope to die more quickly, just like Cerro Azul.

oh come on , we all know that you retired with a truckload of loot . and Robinson will build you a nice 4 place helicopter for as little as $500,000 LOL and you could earn some back by doing medi flights for all the old people up there . your in the money LOL .ok serious,. if you want some elavation go look around Ocu it is in Herrera province , on top of there little mountains about 1/2 drive down to Chitre on a good road , and this area gets way less rain that just about anywhere else in panama .no ocean view but beautiful views of the hills and valleys .well worth the trip before you decide where to hang your hat . and although those selling in gated communities hate to hear this it is very safe living in a small town on the same street as the locals . percentage wise very few in panama live the gated community lifestyle . unless they have been feed a truckload of bull .

Oco sounds like a great stop before you fill up on prescription sleeping aids on your front porch - shotgun in lap out of consideration for your maid who visits weekly and will discover the body.

Most of the well developed places in Panama are in the hotter lowlands. PC and David for example. There aren't a lot of other options if you are needing infrastructure

If you don't want the sewer to come up on the street where you live for four years while the government sleeps then there is no option but to flee up into the mountains and live alone. Then your neighbor stops emptying the septic tank to save money - leaving you in another sewer after spending 400,000 dollars on the property with no legal recourse. The average Panamanian would not hesitate a second to destroy your entire property if it saved him 2 dollars. Stay safe. Stay away.
