    spam

good morning everyone . all the regulars need to send the owner a message telling her she needs to do something about the spam . this site is sliding into the ditch . she needs to appoint some moderators from the regulars and get this under control before she has nobody but the spammers left on here .

    Re: spam

It is a bit annoying. Many forums have settings that allow you to place tighter control on new users. Many of them are simply creating a garbage post so they can add in a link for SEO. There might be an option to disable the ability to add links (in BOTH the body and the Signature, most are putting it in their signature) until you have X amount of posts.

I don't like this idea a ton since it effects valid users ability to post links also but its an idea. Or simply have a few moderators who clean up garbage threads and posts

well i have seen forums where until you post , maybe 10 posts they have to be approved by a moderator before they show up on the forum . that gets rid of lots of this crap .

Agreed. The spam is getting to be a little too much and it seems to be growing.

I'm not sure who the moderators are. The directory says Ed, GordonS, MrWoohoo, and the mysterious Parker. Parker hasn't signed in for a week and Woohoo for 3 weeks. GordonS may be on right now.
Does anyone understand these spam posts? Are they all different people? Usually it is 2-4 posts that don't make any sense and are written in fractured English.

I'm pretty certain Woohoo has moved on to greener pastures.

Yup. Lots of spam. Unfortunately I have other things to do than monitor this forum 24/7 so the little buggers still get their say until I zap 'em. Thanks to all of you who report them since I get email notifications of these assorted perverts, weirdos, misguided sales people (who in their right mind would buy something from them ?? ) and some just outright idiots. Wish there was an electronic bug zapper that would automatically do it, but alas, it's the old read 'em and swat at them. The real spammers are easy to identify but then there are the bizarre comments which require reading a few times to figure out what the h*^@ they're talking about. Some are clearly people from some non-english speaking areas who think they have a grasp of English and jabber away. If they persist, I usually ban them after a few garbled posts. Hard to tell with some though. I suppose some could be genuine people whose English is very spotty and are trying to communicate something valid.
Bottom line: If you're convinced that they're spammers, report them and I'll eventually get around to bringing out the Raid spray..... lol

    Re: spam

A little addendum to my post: Spammers seem to come in swarms (like mosquitos in Canada in summer) so sometimes there are more and sometimes they don't show up for a month or so. Still need your help to let us know about them though. Thanks in advance for your vigilance.

From the last few I have seen. The point of their post is so they can post a link on the board. If you look in their signature there will be (was) a link for some company. The link is all they want, this gives the link more credibility with the search engines (Google) and therefor their site is ranked higher in returns. If a form of black hat (bad) SEO

So if I own a website, I want to go to every board I can find that is indexed by search engines and post links on their sites to mine.

These posters have a interest in whatever company's website they had in their signature. Sometimes they are unscrupulous employees but more of often they are simply hired to spam any online forum with links. They get a few cents per link posted.

Thanks. That explains those idiot ones with the links. I thought it might be something of that nature since it's unlikely anyone in their right mind would go to a link like the one this morning "Winnipeg escorts" because of what it's obviously about. Getting their SEO up would explain a lot of that.
Still wonder about those with the limited English w/out links. Bizzare.
