    Re: Favourite things about Panama?

There are quite a few things in Panama that I like....warm weather, biirds, green foliage; however, I need to mention a few items that drive me nuts...Bought a Corredor Norte pass for $20..., drove to Colon, and the tolls don't accept it....drove to Corredor Sur and tolls don't accept it...only good at Corredor Norte...
Another item of desperation, my visa was denied because was missing just one letter....denied 2 weeks after I submitted it....my atty did nothing to warn me....I submitted it in 4/11 and I found out 11/11. Good thing that I found out, and will resubmit and take care; otherwise I would be back in the good USA....IMAGINE, no post office, no local phone from migracion office, not a letter or call from my attorney...sometimes I think that Panama, not matter how beautiful, is a book story...r

    Re: Favourite things about Panama?

The people and their creations define what is best about a country.

You could be sitting in your bathroom straining real hard for what appears to be hours and when you look down it's the most beautiful and delicately shaped turd, the bottom part baring the resemblance of clustered rabbit poop but seamlessly connected to an end point with smooth non-rugged surfaces and a finish just like a ice cream cone - it's a partial floater highlighting the varied composition and density of the processed foods. You spend days spraying it with steamed wax to preserve the turd, to make the ultimate creation of Panama outlive the generations.

    Re: Favourite things about Panama?

I thought this thread was about favorite things about Panama, I think we have to respect each others opinions, I found very offensive some of the comments about Panama and their people. Yes, Panama has beautiful women like in any other country; Yes, Panama is a cosmopolitan country, is a melting pot of different ethnicity (Hindus, Chinese, Germans, Mexicans and many others), and this is so because of the Panama canal. The fishing is excellent, also like the food specially the carimanolas, tamales, chicharrones, tortillas and empanadas. But the thing I like the best about Panama is that I could be at the beach at any time I want too.

    Re: Favourite things about Panama?

Rigo, the reason I chose PTY to live is because of the beauty of the country...you are right, the fishing, the beaches, the birds and so many other things...however; there are many items that I feel no need for them; Panama must do something about them...Take the Corredor Norte's traffic jam...the reason is because the tolls' collection systems are outdated...Take Miami, they use Sunpass and you don't even stop....automatically your cuota is deducted from your account..(by the way, you recharge by using government/business or computer technology, no need to wait in line).
Another area of improvement is the Civil Service....it should be apolitical....Remember, I have no ill intentions with my comments, on the contrary, I'm one of the few foreigners that enjoy Osvald Ayala and la Musica Tipica.

Rock, the thread is favorite things about Panama, not the worst things about Panama, someone started this thread because of the negativity in this forum about Panama. For some reason we forget that Panama still and underdeveloped country and people from developed countries feel superior and better than the panamenian people I don`t understand why, because, must countries have their own problems and we all are in the same boat, we all are the same, not better.

The USA is chock full of idiots, ignoramuses and thieves. Canada is bursting at the seams with them as well. Hardly the place for moral high ground either of them.

Liont, if you come to Boquete, try the espresso at the Kotowa coffeehouse, simply #1.
It's located at the entrance of Boquete ,just where it says "BIENVENIDOS A BOQUETE"

    Re: Favourite things about Panama?

Look, I currently reside in the US, but (as it might be obvious to any astute observer) I was born in Panama. Not only that, I love my country as I love my own kids. I am a patriot as I am a parent. I wear my patriotism on my sleave (so to speak) and I'm not ashamed. I accentuate the positive and downplay the negative. If you pick a rose, you accept the thorns.

Sure, Panamas has it's drawbacks (so does every country, even the US!) but it has a built-in excuse (unlike the US) - it still is - and may continue to be throughout my lifetime - a THIRD WORLD country! Be that as it may, I plan to come full circle and retire in Panama. God willing, I will die were I was born... I love Panama!

    VIVA PANAMA!

So your favorite thing about Panama is the thorns? Apart from your own uncontrollable emotions the only thing you mention about Panama is the thorns.

Panamax, I understand your feelings about your country, Panama, because, I feel the same way about my country, it really doesn`t matter how others feel about it, to me my country with the good, the bad, and the ugly is the best place on earth. God bless.

You are a gifted minority on this thread. With rare insight, you get were I'm coming from. That said, and if you don't mind my asking, which is your country?

If I may. It has been my experience that folks who have a good outlook on their life take that outlook with them wherever they go or live. Regardless of where you are in the world you can find things to complain about if so inclined. The question was what do you like about Panama? Having lived in PC for five years in the late sixties and early seventies I would tell you that you will be hard pressed to find a more warm and wonderful people anywhere. The countryside itself is spectacular. Weather can be wonderful or frustrating depending on your plans just as anywhere. The opportunity to experience and embrace another culture is a blessing!

    Re: Favourite things about Panama?

I'm writing from La Chorrera right now and my favorite thing is the people... I have very good Spanish and that's a big key... The people are a lot of fun... For instance I just went to have some dental work done this morning... I got in a cab and a guy asked me where I wanted to go... I said "El Rey"... I can never seem to get the accent right on "El Rey" so he asked if I spoke Spanish which I do of course and we started a conversation and when he heard that I was from a small farming like town in Washington State his eyes lit up... He said we had similar upbringing and when he goes to the U.S. he wants to spend a week in a small farming community... He was a very nice guy and at the end he said "No charge"... I of course insisted that he take the money and we compromised on $1 for a $2 trip...

There is one thing I absolutely view with disgust... Retirees flocking here with a camera tethered to their neck and draped over a Hawaii style flower covered shirt depicting a sunset... The same disgust applies to Miami silk... I hate that ESPECIALLY if they don't speak a lick of Spanish... It is ugly and gives me a bad name... I don't at all mind being called a gringo as long as I don't think that the person is visualizing Grampa with his Hawaii button down smiling and nodding at a guy asking him where the store is... YUCK!

So do you think he will be able to save $3000 for a US trip or do you think he talked shit like everyone else here?

Yeah, I can't think of any better way to judge people than what shirt they wear. Just had my teeth cleaned too - very painful as compared to the US. And I get really tired of the PC taxi drivers ripping me off.

It is a good judging factor if you are here... Seriously... Its a special type of person... He may or may not ever have the money but he was legitimately excited... A very nice guy and he sounded like he really wanted to but $3000 is a lot of money here... No guarantee he will do it but thats all good... The point was he was super excited and friendly
