    2. Milk/l or quart
    3. flour/lb
    4. sugar/lb
    5. fresh fish/lb tuna snapper etc...
    6. Vegetable oil/l or quart
    7. Bread like french bread or similar
    8. whole chicken
    9. pork chops/lb
    10. 24 pack coke
    11. 6 pack beer import and local
    12. fresh potato/lb
    13. fresh veggies of all sorts
    14. fruits from market
    15. Cost of electricity/kwh around Coronado
    16. Gas/Gal
    17. Car prices compared to Florida
    18. Internet access and cable prices for top speed
    19. Kindergarten and school fees
    20. Doctor's visit with let's say flu or rashes
    21. Electronics and appliances compared to FL same makes and models (not comparing cheap Chinese stuff in Panama to quality Chinese stuff in FL since everything is made in China anyway)
    22. Furniture and mattresses (same condition as above)
    23. Clothing and shoes

While on the subject are there farmers' markets around PC?

Please feel free to post any other prices you can think of.

Assume that 6 bucks includes two doctors visits, school fees, a wardrobe of clothes, furniture and six whole chickens? Agree, Panama has never been cheaper and would recommend it highly )

the doc visits might add a little bit more , and it would have to be public school for it to fit in the said fee base , private are expensive , like $120 a yr i think

Re: A price list if you will?

    10: Around 15 bucks.
11: $2.10 for bottles, $3.30 for cans. Imports start at $1.50 per bottle unless very common.
    15: 16 cents per kWh
16: $3.99 per gallon for 91 octane (dirty garbage gas)
    17: 40-50 % uplift
18: 4 Mbit should be pretty cheap now, around 30-40 bucks. Faster than that and the price goes up fast.
20: If you know what you need, $1 per prescription.
    21: 20-25 % more

I didn't know that getting a rational response was gonna be this hard. Must be something in the local water? I man don't shop for food eh?
Thanks for the replies. Please feel free to fill the blanks and lay off the liquor

    Hi Ed,
I see you spend a lot of time on this forum. I want to thank you for getting me activated. That should increase your rep power however that works. This forum only works with Gmail? Is this guy serious expecting someone to report back with an extensive detailed market research on prices of so many items especially on items as vague as clothing and shoes? My god. Take care Ed. Nos hablamos.

    Here is more stuff:

Check page 11. It's a bit old, but try to web search for "canasta basica panama" and you will find something useful eventually.

Actually here is the mother load:

    Ministerio de Economía y Finanzas

Maybe you can make a spreadsheet of this now and state your conclusions.

My conclusion - Martinelli is using government money to study his supermarket competitors.

Re: A price list if you will?

food prices seem to be going up quite rapidly. The 2 liter box of Clos white wine at Super99 has gone from $3.75 to $5.25. Duran whole bean coffee went from $4.90 to well over $5. Beer has gone up. You need a mortgage to buy nuts, chocolate, decent cheese, and olive oil. Forget about imported booze. And this is at Super99, not El Rey or Riba Smith. There is this old canard you hear a lot especially from shills like IL: "You can buy food cheap if you live like a local and avoid imported goods!". But practically EVERYTHING in a Pana supermarket is imported even items that you would not consider to be a luxury such as basic canned goods, salad dressing, cheese, toilet paper etc. And even the canasta basica isn't cheap. I don't see how the natives can afford to eat. I guess their diet is hot dogs, rice, and bananas.

What is really interesting from this is the fact that they have decided that a family of four can be fed properly an entire month for $105.49 if using the cheapest option. That's 88 cents per person and day.

I spent $392 yesterday on a full, very full though, shopping cart in Rey supermarket. I think even Holland supermarkets can compete with the prices here even though they use the "expensive" euro.

Re: A price list if you will?

I don't see how a family of four can be fed on $105.49 a month even on a strict poverty diet with nothing more than cheap hot dogs, Ricamar sardines in tomato sauce at 40cents a can and rice and bananas. That's 88 cents per person and day. Good. Each Pana is entitled to two 5.5oz cans of Ricamar brand Sardines in tomato sauce per day. I guess they will have to skip lunch. But at 40c a can it makes very affordable cat food.

I keep track of my monthly food expenses and it averages between $100-$150 for just me and that is just basic crockpot cooking heavy on the beans and chicken. Forget luxuries. Although that does include wine and beer and scotch without which I would go insane so maybe I should separate that out and categorize them as medicine. Super99 does have some deals on cheap but drinkable scotch, e.g., Clan MacGregor for $7.47 and two others whose names I don't recall. That is one of the very few anomalies where something is actually cheaper than in the US. Of course you have to add the 10% booze tax so the $7.47 becomes $8.22.

I sure wish they had a Walmart here. I know that sounds ethnocentric but prices are too high and they need some competition.

Food prices are skyrocketing everywhere thanks to inflation and ethanol.

No, I just want reasonable food prices and some quality affordable shopping. Mexico has several Walmarts and it hasn't destroyed their country. El Machetazo and El Costo are sorry excuses for shopping.

At the door of the Oval Office:

    Knock knock.
    The President: Who's there?

    The President: Kenya who?
A: Kenya show me your birth certificate?

well its only a short flight to Mexico . El Machetazo ans El Costo are not the only 2 stores in panama , and dont say wallymart does not screw up a area , they move in and all the other mom and pop places close , why do you think the USA is in the shape it is , because they send billions every month to china , do your homework on world economics before you start talking about how great wallymart is .

The US would be in much better shape if there was no progress in past 100 years, at least debt-wise and on paper - basically just a big country with farmers then. That is beside the point though, going back to a system where food, clothes and general living supplies were sold inefficiently and to a higher cost would make no sense whatsoever. Problem is that the junkie (US government) has an unlimited line of credit with a AAA rating - however that happened.

I dont think walmart would charge american prices if they would set up shop here. Way too tempting to team up with rey and 99 and charge x2-3!

its not Reys and 99 setting all the high prices , the goverment of panama taxes all imports like food and guns very high , not sure the % on food , but guns 100% , and would think there are other things taxed as high , get off the canned USA imports and start buying fresh produce and make homemade soup etc , you might just live longer as a bonus
