I seriously doubt there is a 100% import tax on food. I would guess it is not even close. But i know for sure there is a 100% margin or more. Either way, i was just trying to say a walmart wouldnt result in lower prices, regardless if it is because of tax or profit.

Only if you enjoy cooking. Assuming you spend 1 hour cooking you would die 1/16 earlier than your life expectancy. I'd rather die 4 years earlier than spend 4 years cooking soup.

China is importing the inflation by maintaining the peg and the idiots try fighting it with higher interest rates. All they do is encourage carry trade. Ppl who have access to cheap money from the Bernank take that $ to China and collect interest on it.

Yes that is the major lure of any country where food is grown and the average population is poor. They must eat. They can't pay much to do so. If they can so can we who are a lot better off than they are. Watch New York and Los Angeles blow up if there is a currency crisis. The moment you see price controls head for the hills because stores will empty out and the riots follow soon.
Injustice will not cause riots. As long there is bread and circus the population is content. There always was oppression in Egypt, the shit spilled over only after people started to go hungry. Make food disappear and your children cry of hunger AND unfairness (real or perceived) and the lid is blown off.

and thats the prolbem with lots of gringos , they want there can goods from the states , shop at reys etc , they wont go to the local market and buy like a local , hell I know gringos that would never eat at a road side fonda , they would buy fish from price-smart but never stop and buy from the guy with a beat up pickup truck and a cooler along side the road , so then they bitch .

I agree.Many Americans come here without an understanding of how this country works and their way of thinking and expect the panamanian to change.When it is us that should change.I have been in the Seafood industry here for 12 years and I found out very fast that it was me that had to change if I wanted to stay here.
I think if the labor laws were changed and it not so costly to get rid of a person maybe they would take their job and customer service more seriously.Bottom line you are in their country learn to play their game better than they do.MHO panama will never have a Chess champion.
