Is there any kind of recycling programs here in Panama? How can I get my building to have recycling? Thanks!

We have a recycling center in Boquete, but I'm not sure about anywhere else.

    Re: Recycling

That is sad if there are no recycling programs here. I did see a few people on the street carrying large bags filled with cans. There must be recycling centers located around Panama other than just Boquete

Recycling in PC is easy......... put it all out for the trash the night before and the local 'scavenger' will sort out anything of use before the garbage truck arrives.

    Re: Recycling

You have to do it yourself. It's going to involve educating the whole building on what can and cannot be recycled. Then you'll have to arrange to get it picked up. My friends did it in a building in Paitilla. Where do you live?

There are businesses that will take your stuff - unfortunately most places won't take everything - it's wither just cans or just plastic.

I know someone who has a list of all the recycling places - I'll ask her for it and post up the info here.

I store all of mine until I'm full - load up the car and dump it at various recycling places.

    Re: Recycling

Thanks for the info @snohobo! I live in the Obarrio district.

It would be really great if you can post the list of all the recycling places!

I'm here for a month and I would love to educate the people here on recycling and create a recycling program at my building. With so much plastic consumer waste here and no recycling, its sad to think of where all this non-biodegradable trash ends up (especially since we're right next to two oceans)

It would be great if you can connect me with your friends that set up recycling in Paitilla or post details on how they did it.

I'd like to leave this place with at least a slight movement toward positive change.

    Re: Recycling

I think we need to get down to the basics. I would like to see people depositing their trash in a waste bin, instead of on my lawn and in the streets and on the beaches. Do you have some suggestions?

    Re: Recycling

@Pollerkeeper - the only way to change this is by educating the people of Panama about recycling

People just don't understand or think about what happens to trash/waste and how it effects not just Panama, but the environment/planet. People have no idea how serious this situation is.

The solution, even just for the basics of trash disposal, starts with educating people on the importance of recycling and the effects of waste on our environment and planet.
