New Thai Restaurant In Panama City

So I just got back from Panama City and wouldn't you know, there is a decent Thai restaurant. The place is called Sukhi and is located next to Sushi Express in the bank district, just around the corner from the Mariott hotel. My friends enjoyed they Pad Thai and I liked Thai basil stir fry. The flavor is very good but I do wish they did a little more with coconut milk in the curries. Meals are priced between $8-$10, worth checking out.

I have been missing Thai food for a few years as well. The food does have the authentic Thai spice and flavors that you would expect.

That is one ethnic group that I have never met someone from in Panama.

That's what I thought as well, a Thai restaurant? -- WOOOOHOOOO!!! My friends and I got a chance to talk with the owner as well as the chef that lived in Thailand for some years learning how to cook. The big problem in Panama is getting all of the spices that you need to cook Thai food according to them. I have noticed that myself with regular cooking as well.

Maybe I will open up a Vietnamese Pho place when I come down to Panama!!! Just kidding. We run a Caribbean take-out not and it is time for us to call it quits on the cooking scene.

Yes, agree that it is so hard to find SE Asian ingredients and condiments here. Chinese ingredients are aplenty, but it is hard to find things like lemon grass, pandan leaves. So far I've only found 1 store that sells Thai fish sauce. Even tomyum paste is selling at a premium price. Perhaps if someone knows where to get these stuff can share with us here.

I just took a Thai cooking class. She gave us her secret to getting the ingredients. One is the Mini-max Fruteria in the Bal Harbor Shopping center, and the other is the Foodie Store in the same shopping center. Those are in PC, but there are 2 stores in David that carry some, not all, of the sauces and veggies. The PC stores will Flete your order to you. The lemon grass grows wild here, so she just goes out and picks whatever she needs.

I go to one at Bal Harbor, don't recall what the name is.
Maybe I should get a stalk of lemon grass and try propagating it myself..

Re: New Thai Restaurant In Panama City

While on the subject of ethnic food...my wife has become very good at cooking East Indian food while working for an East Indian family. Can we find the spices in Panama? We have had no luck in the Chitre / Las Tablas area and are hoping to find a market closer to PTY. Does anyonme have suggestions??

I found a small grocery store selling Indian spices and things outside the Jewish supermart at Multicentro.
Not sure about the selection, I didn't get to spend much time in there.

I buy my spices and superfoods in the USA and bring them back when I fly back. Or import them.

That's what I plan to do too. I will carry some spices that I cannot part from. It would be great to have the spices available for purchase in PC though.

Re: New Thai Restaurant In Panama City

I've put lots of spices/dried herbs into my boxes in my container. They arrived fine, but I don't think they will keep long, after spending that much time in the hot container.
As for bringing them with you flying in, I've heard that the customs are strict about dried plants (eg shitake mushrooms). Not sure, haven't tried. Any experiences?

I thought I saw them at Riba Smith.
But I just use another brand - Saf Instant - think it's from Mexico. It is cheaper.
    Works just the same.
Mr Woohoo, are you baking bread?

Tried to go there today -- I was extremely disappointed to see that they were closed for the day.
