redundant internet at the beach?

wondering if any of you know of any solutions for getting a redundant internet connection out by the beach near el higo/san carlos area (i work from home and rely on it). looking at renting a house and they have cable modem already setup. 3g and in general cell phone service doesn't look like it works very well out there. i'm thinking i could maybe run adsl as well, but not sure if there's much redundancy if it's the same isp (c&w). would really like to try and live out of the city if possible, so any other ideas would be appreciated. thanks!

Cable Onda and Cable Wireless are probably your two most practical solutions.

From experience, outside of Panama City I don't think it's possible to get a reliable internet connection. Might as well save yourself the anxiety.

Depends on what it is you do for work though. If you need a 100% reliable 24/7 connection then forget about it. If you can live with major drops in speed and sometimes even zero connectivity at random intervals, for random periods of time then go for it.

Also if it rains heavy you'll lose your connection entirely most times.

That's just my experience trying to work on a Cable Onda connection. Others experiences may differ, but I somehow doubt it.

I have reliable internet in Las Tablas, no problem. Rain storms do not effect my internet connection whatsoever. I will say Cable and Wireless is better than Cable Onda for connectivity.

I live in the Copecito area and have never had a problem with my internet in over 5 years. I have satellite from MobilNet. I get high winds, let alone the rain.

Jeeze well if I knew I could get a 99.9% reliable connection in the interior that would be great. Where I was staying in Chitre CW didn't even service the area I was living in yet (new development).

I saw a billboard for new development 3 bed 2 bath houses starting at B./33K - would snatch one of those up in a heartbeat.

I was told that broadband did not reach Las Tablas until 2 years ago. I have to admit I was amazed that I was able to get good & reliable internet here.

Re: redundant internet at the beach?

thanks for the replies guys. much appreciated. i work in finance, so internet is pretty important. i know i'm taking a risk outside the city, but since i'm not stuck in an office, i really don't need to be there.

so to recap, so far we have, cw, cable onda and mobilnet as options. i did a little homework and looks like sky has a satellite internet service in panama as well now. cw has a land line service, but i'm not sure if it's out the house yet. i'm thinking i could get a cheap dial-up for emergencies and then go with one of the satellite co.s for the third.

re: mobilnet. mary, are you sure that's satellite? looking at their website, looks like they're using wimax, but i'm not sure if they offer satellite service as well that might not be advertised. Servicios Residenciales - Mobilnet de Mobilphone -Internet y Redes de Datos . i ask because satellite does have problems during rains/cloudy from my experience. regardless, if it's as steady as you say, would be a great alternative.

Hi!

I have a dish on my roof with no land lines. It is set-up like my DirecTV. Even when the TV is out I still have internet and that drives my hubby crazy (LOL)!

We get a lot of rain up here and have never had any problems, I also get high winds (50 MPH +).

So maybe I misspoke, because it is pointed towards cell phone towers in El Valle.

You could put up an external antenna for cellular internet. Or use satellite.
