Thread: I need your help

Hello my name is Jonathan, I'm 43 yrs old and single. Over the last month I have been trying to learn everything I can about Panama. In fact this weekend I'm planning on buying some program to learn spanish. You see right now I live in Philadelphia Pa. U.S.A. I really want to move to Panama. Out of all the places I checked out Panama is the one that appeals to me the most. I've also heard alot of good things about it. The truth is I do not like what the country I'm in now stands for. I see how they manipulate people through the mainstream media and all the lies upon lies of every aspect of the U.S. I really don't feel safe here at all. ................... ........... ..However, I have lived around here all my life and to just pick up and move far away is a bit scary especially to a different country. Where would I go? What would I do? I don't know anybody in Panama. I hope somebody will give me a chance. To give you a basic idea of myself I'm very creative and artistic, I'm a very skilled carpenter, handyman and property maintenance person. I'm a songwriter with my own small studio, I play keyboards. I've had some minor modeling and acting experience over 15 yrs ago. I love animals and have a beautiful little girl cat that I love like a daughter. Moving to another country with her is what makes it scary. I'm hoping someone can communicate with me here on this site and help me prepare for this major move and help lead me in the right direction. THANK YOU

you are joking right ? , you now think you want to move here and you have never been to panama , book a trip , spend a month or more and then see if you feel the same way , you can not believe everything you read on the net , you need to be here , experiance the country and the lifestyle , and also unless you have the money to support yourself it is all but a dream , getting work here is almost impossible , unless you start your own company and follow all the rules about hiring locals , or have 300 grand to invest and get the self solvent visa , phone the airline first ,

My suggestion to anybody that is new and is looking to move here is start reading through the forum. You will find a lot of information posted here by many people over the years. Being a skilled carpenter/handyman does offer some opportunity here. I know of a person right now that would love to have somebody skilled and willing to actually work build him a house but there are legalities you will have to deal with to do the work. Do remember this is a foreign country and is REALLY different from the USA. Tolerance is and a smile is your friend.

I appreciate the quick response I wonder if it would be possible to find someone in Panama who I could work out a deal with like this. I would take care of their property, clean, whatever in exchange for a place to live ?

If we could figure out the legalities of the situation you could probably be working pretty quickly on the bottom of the Azuero.

Why don't you feel safe? I heard Philly has cleaned up its act lately, no? Move down to Panama for a few months and see if you like it. If not, you can always return home. Just have someone watch your cat or bring her down too. It will cost some money and some paperwork, but she will be fine. I think depending on her size, she may be able to ride in the cabin with you.

I don't think you want to look at a maid's position. That's $200 per month, a bed and some food.

Moving to Panama using your strategy would be nearly impossible in my opinion. But, I highly recommend that you vacation here.

I met somebody that bought a couple of lots there but I don't see much construction as of yet. Costa Pedasi seems to be getting built.

Like GHammner stated "I highly recommend that you vacation here." Not only that you may want to spend some real quality time living here before you fully commit to anything. This place is REALLY different from the USA and it takes a complete change mentally to adapt and be happy. Apathy is rampant down here and it makes things challenging to accomplish. I do personally feel there is A LOT of opportunity for a good handyman here in Panama. No doubt mvuytowecz could probably find work for a qualified handyman as well in the Coronado area.

I recommend a lot longer than a couple months before making a decision with any permanence. Then again, perhaps jumping in with both feet will make you appreciate what you leave behind

I'm very adaptable to different cultures. I have been to several other places in the world. I don't fit in here. I thank you for your advise and am taking it. I really believe the American empire is going to collapse totally soon. United States is becoming the most hated country in the world. The dollar is losing value all over the world Peak Oil is here and it's the beginning of the end of industrialized civilization. Sounds like you believe that the person that started this thread is a "kook". He has some very real concerns in my mind.

The original poster does have some legit concerns. However, saying "the American empire is going to collapse totally soon" is a bit kooky in my opinion.

If you do your research online there are loads of websites that sell that kind of language. And, with the economy the way it is--hmmm. It's real easy to sell gloom and doom right now. In my opinion, we are on the cusp of change. But, I am not a doom-sayer.

Fortunately, I have put in my fair share of research and continue to do so. More importantly, I guess I am a tougher "sell" than some others.
