Saw that story on Don Winners blog. Seems like there are to sides to this story.
What the guy is complaining about is standard operating procedure in Panama.
This guy read the Panama brochure, bought something, moved here, and is now surprised that the standards just are not here. This is a prime example why you want to spend time living here (at least 6 months - 1 year) before purchasing anything.
The guy says his next protest is going to be in front of the Presidential Palace and that he will try and get arrested. I am sure he can accomplish that goal. If he really wanted to get arrested he should just toss those LG units through that glass window behind him. That should do the trick and save himself cab fair o the Palace.
LOL -- this video cracked me up big time. Obviously he hasn't "integrated" in the culture yet. LOL
It's probably like this:
Yes, the units we sold you were returned by someone else before (and nicely repackaged) and even known to be broke before you got them (hehe, stupid gringo...). We know that the guy who installed them did no damage to them whatsoever. However, we will not give you a refund, store credit or otherwise because the guy was not certified by LG.
As always in Panama, the piece of paper is important, not logic, reason, efficiency nor common decency.
I don't think this will work out the way he is expecting, that is for sure.
You can even have a dialogue with this guy in the comments section
in youtube.
I think it just did when HOSEM1 posted the thread! Noone would buy from these guys being aware of the story.
A few tips for shopping in Panama:
1. Inspect all units for dents and damages.
2. If a package looks like it has been repackaged, DO NOT EVEN LET THEM ENTER WITH IT.
3. Unpack and test ALL UNITS before they are allowed to leave.
4. Do not accept anything without the warranty card. If the card is missing, do not accept the unit.
5. Never accept delivery without being present.
6. Make them write on the invoice that you have 1 MONTH to return the product directly to the store in case it does not work for a full CASH credit.
7. Do not sign for partial deliveries.
8. Pay on delivery if you have that option.
Make this clear to the store manager, not the clerk, before finalizing the purchase in the store.

He really is not expecting it to work out. I know his kind of person. Plenty of them in the UK. I mention on my comment in Don Winner's site that a farmer after a dispute drove his slurry sprayer to the building of the company and sprayed it with slurry. There are a lot of reactionaries in the UK. Usually old guys, usually used to a culture of hard work for a fair days pay, and accustomed to a sense of real community and social justice..... then he moved to Panama
He really picked both the right and wrong place. Wrong place to make himself happy - he'd be better off back in England, or even Ireland. But the right place in the sense that someone needs to stand up to juega vivo. I have to say, I like this guy, my Dad's mates are mostly like this. They grumble a lot about the modern world, have a lot of stories about the aftermath of WW2 and they generally are a kind and well meaning lot, but they hate to be fucked around.
here is a youtube video worth viewing for comparison with this man. How wrong is he really?

I agree that the guy has a legit reason to be upset but doing anything here is a struggle and doesn't work the way it is supposed to. I honestly can sympathize with the guy but compared to some of the stuff that happens here AC units is minor. I have had my share of dealing with AC units in Panama City and there were times I wanted to get a hammer and just start breaking stuff. Like I said, I can sympathize with the guy but as the saying goes "this is Panama".
There was also a good point made in the youtube comments, he could have given them to a hospital or a charity that could have made use of them instead of destroying them and got much better pr for his gripe to boot.
Yes, because whenever you have been screwed by all and sundry the first thing you are going to think of is charity. Well, you would if you were Mother Theresa, but he's just a retired old bloke from the south of England
I just think that the reaction to him of "Get over it" is very fatalistic. What I am saying is, I like his attitude to this. Very Howard Beale in Network. Juega vivo is the absence of culture. It happens everywhere in the world.
He's an old guy in a crazy modern world. The fact he can work a TV remote is a miracle never mind posting his video to youtube after filming it on a camcorder.
"I mention on my comment in Don Winner's site"
Ah, Don Winner's website, he is the one labouring under the illusion that dispatching a victim with a shot to the back of the neck originated in Nazi concentration camps ergo proof enough for him that William Holbert is a white supremacist that should rot in hell before he is given the benefit of a trial. Hate to have him arbitrating if I had a problem.
Yes, Venables is just a guy that feels he has been ripped off, and trying to get satisfaction his way, each to his own but the mainstream Panama media is worthless for that purpose.
The guy should have a seco con vaca!! lol
Think Don Winner thinks Venables is an Uber-Jerk or something to that effect. And I happened to think that one should feel a bit pissed off if one is conned. And I like his style with how he expressed his feelings with an axe. Very like Fawlty Towers when Basil Fawlty cracks up when his temperamental car that workmen assured was fixed gives up the ghost when he urgently needs to be somewhere and is already late.
BBC worldwide might work in Panama, given it says worldwide, but here is the youtube clip of Basil Fawlty,

So I just came back from Pedasi and I was visiting somebody that owns somewhat of a plant nursery. I showed up just in time to watch an expat from NY flip out over the price of some cheap plants. Supposedly a deal had been reached a day earlier, this guy comes back the next day, changes his mind 3x, and then starts talking about how people from NY don't "F Around". First thing I though of was this guy from the UK and the AC problems. Let's face it, we are talking plants that aren't to expensive, and this guy is laying into an expat local that knows everybody in town.
I hope that Walmart, Home Depot, IKEA and some others will set up shop here some time. Half the price and seamless to return your $hit. Plus it will nuke a lot of the garbage straight off the market. Bad Walmart come here, destroy my little tienda with $5 tennis balls - sell for $1.83. Bad Home Depot, sell my $25 water filters for $10 3-pack.
Never liked Walmart - too much useless shite in it. Ikea is OK.
Price Smart is a pretty decent alternative considering where we are at. It almost feels like you are in a WalMart or Sam's.
PriceMart is a waste of time for most products: except for the food. A lot of their prices on electronics and gear is higher than other stores in Panama.
Best place to buy apples in Panama!![]()
