My understanding (at least for Mas Movil) is that you can activate data on your cell phone then take the SIM and put it into a USB 3G cellular modem and use your laptop at about 200Kbits/sec. All on a prepaid card. Cost $1/day or less.

Has anyone tried an unlocked Android phone (quad band GSM of course) with google maps navigation in Panama? I'm curious if it works and works well enough to replace using a normal car navigation GPS.

I've learned that one can also use MapDroyd for navigation - you don't need data service or even phone service - just an Android phone. It uses the data from openstreetmap.org which I contribute to. If anyone has gps track data from roads in Panama that aren't yet mapped, send them to me and I'll add them to this free and open map source. Panama City appears to be well mapped already.

I'm sure there are similar programs if you have a laptop and a USB GPS.
