I've had VOnage for years and have used it in many countries. But I read on the internet that at least 1 internet provider in Panama has blocked their customer's ability to use VoIP services?
Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks in advance!
I don't use Vonage, but I use VoiceStick (better rates for me then Vonage) down here and I haven't had any problems with my CableOnda (the cable internet company down here) connection.
Yes, years ago Cable & Wireless won a lawsuit in Panama that made it *illegal* to use VOIP -- the first country in the world to effect such a ban. However, they only went after very high-use business customers, and I believe they've since given up on that. As a home/personal user, you'll have no problem.
All VOIP solutions work as long as you have a decent internet connection. I have used Skype, Gizmo5, Vonage, and MagicJack. I currently prefer MagicJack for price, simplicity, and voice quality. (Like Vonage, with MagicJack you can plug in any "normal" phone. Unlike Vonage, however, your computer has to be on.)
Getting off topic a bit. But I just got MagicJack and after 1 hour it hangs up on me. This is killing me on long conference calls last week. My friend has had it for months and had zero issues, even from Thailand. However, he now has the 1 hour issue too. Support is no help. They give the run around and even claim the little unit is getting hot. Ridiculous. I'm sure they've sold so many of them that they are struggling to keep up with capacity with their servers and have implemented this short term solution.
...the cut off was a "feature" of Magicjack that they installed to eliminate "phantom" calls. However, a poster on 12/24 says that an upgrade did away with it, and he had no problem with a 2-hour call.
