    calls centers in panama city

well, first off i've been checking out this forum for a while now and i finally decided to register ! i look foward to making some new friends on here.

my names Michell, i'm a single 20 year old, born in Panama, but raised in the states. i'm currently living in orlando florida right now but i defintely plan on moving back to Panama next year. i have plently of family down there but it would be nice to meet some americans as well being that i was raised here.

    anyways, back on topic..
my biggest concern when i move to panama is finding a job and an apartment, maybe even a decent house..? i'm working at an american call center right now but EVERYONE keeps telling me that i will automatically get hired at a call center if i move to Panama being that i am bi-lingual.

how true is this? anyone know how many call centers are in panama? do they pay american style? they say call centers usually pay higher than the regular day job in panama.

if i really do decide to move, i will be giving up somethings, in hopes of recieving something better. not nessacarily money wise but i refuse to work at the local MACHETAZO selling make up LOL jk..

but seriously, i need advice before i decide to move out there.

anyone wanna be friends on myspace its -http://www.myspace.com/michellsopropa

    Hello Michell

    Welcome on the forum....

I can only comment on the apartments, in that you can find them, but expect to pay a high price for rent. In some cases as much or more than the USA even. Not sure what you are paying now, but $900 to $1,200 is not that high in Panama city if you want your own place, with your own bathroom etc, that is nice in a good area, unless you want to just rent a room. Panama is booming and a shortage of places to rent including hotels.

Call centers would pay better than other jobs in Panama, [maybe twice as much as many jobs] but less than you are getting in the states, I can't comment exactly on Panama, but I know this is true in other countries like Philippines, were I know many people that work in call centers, and I am sure it is the same for Panama as well. This is the reason companies move to countries like Panama or Philippines, for a cheaper wages, otherwise they would stay in the USA.

You could also check out stock brokerage companies and banks, they are always short of bi speakers.

Hope the best with your move.

    Darryl

Rent in safe areas is easily available in PC for $500/month for a 1 or 2 bedroom. That said, most gringos would not live in those areas due to their perception. To get things cheaper, you have to go pretty far out and suffer the commute. Yes, the call centers will hire you (probably), but starting salary will be around $600/month; the ceiling for such jobs is around $800/month.

If the rent is $500 and the salary is $600, then how she is going to survive? If this is the case, then it will be sheer stupidity to move from Orlando to Panama. Still.. I thought the salary will be atleast 1 Grand per month.

well, i have been checking out some apartments on encuentra24.com and the apartments that are 900-1500 a month are usually luxury apartments in paitilla and those type of areas. i know because my cousin was paying that amount for her place and although it was beautiful, i don't need it (atleast for right now).

I am Panamanian so i have no problem living in a middle-class suburb with the locals for example don bosco, san antonio, villa lucre. i'm sure i can find something for a decent price.

and yes Darryl, you are right about call center jobs. i talked to one of my bosses at my job and she told me they are international american call centers because the labor is cheaper in places like phillipines; panama included. i've been looking at the classifieds online and the lowest they pay (depending on the company) is $500 and the highest is $1000. so it just depends i guess, plus call centers give out alot of weekly bonuses. i just earned 3 different bonuses last week at my job.

i wouldnt mind settling for $800/month in panama. thats great when the average Panamanian averages about $400 a month. i have no idea how they are able to live with that income, but they do... its crazy.

thanks for all the help by the way.

The way virtually every Panamanian mid-level (or below) worker does: By living with a roommate or family. Now, it depends a great deal on what one regards as "safe": I live in a fairly high-end neighborhood (rents are $1000-2000), but a woman I was dating lives in a 2-bdrm apartment 10 minutes from here that's $350/month, and she shares that with a roommate. Btw, she is a radiation therapist for a goverment hospital and earns $800/month. ($800 is the cap for many jobs, because anything more than that moves to a significantly higher level of taxation.)

I agree with the person who mentioned banks and other financial institutions. Call centers are basically dead end jobs. It may be okay while you're looking for something else, however. Also take into consideration after a certain amount, you'll be taxed heavily; social security, education tax, and government tax.
Rents...another story. It's possible to get something for $500. somewhere near the center of the city, but rare these days. This may be the most difficult part in your potential move.
Because you were born here (Panama), you won't need a work permit which will eliminate lawyer fees and the various pay offs attatched to that whole procedure.
    Good luck !

$500 rent is still too expensive (for panama that is) so maybe I should consider moving a little farther from the city, but not too far. Looking for a decent place looks like it might be a challenge..

and yes I was born in Panama, so all I have to do is go get my cedula when I get there.

    This call center is hiring:
    http://www.interfacepanama.com/index-2.php

Starting salary is $500/month (and that's pretty standard for Panama).

Hi anne, yes i did move to Panama. I been here since April. I'm working down here, its not that great, but I'd rather spend my income than to have to dig into my savings accounts. If you speak fluent english down heres its pretty easy to find a job. I practically found mines without even looking. if you want my msn messenger is michellapa@hotmail.com

    hasta luego...
