Three Men Die While Cleaning Out Septic Tank

La Estrella - Three workers of the Xtra Supermarket in 24 de Diciembre passed away yesterday after being overcome by fumes when cleaning a septic tank. The men were apparently working without the property safety equipment. Four others were taken to the emergency room of the Santo Tomas hospital where they have been hospitalized. Several of the men who were affected had tried to rescue their companions, but when they found them it was already too late. The tragedy happened yesterday in the afternoon hours. (Comments Follow)
Editor's Comment: One of the guys who died in this accident was a butcher working for the supermarket. How does it make you feel to know that a butcher was assigned to clean out a septic tank? Remember when the bilateral Free Trade Agreement between Panama and the United States was being hammered out and Panama was complaining because the US wanted to impose FDA food safety measures? Yeah, right. While you can find filth in any operating food preparation location if you look hard enough, I know that in Panama standards are much lower, inspections much less frequent, and government agencies operate with much less resources. In should be noted that the Xtra chain of supermarkets is one of the lowest priced, and now you know why. No matter - in this country, cook the hell out of everything, especially if you have little kids.

"What a way to go" is right!

I think the writer of that article was also a bit concerned about the question of whether the butcher had a practice of cleaning out the septic tank before working on the next piece of meat to be prepared. Probably not.

At least they died doing what they love, being close to fecal matter.
