I don't know where modivilla is coming from, but it isn't Panama. :-)
Satellite internet service is available in Panama, but I have not heard good things -- something about Panama being too far south of the satellites' orbit to get a good signal. And, it's expensive.
Most people in the boonies who need faster than dial-up service go with a wireless provider. They are not available in all locations, of course, but they are starting to pop up in areas where the economy (read: ex-pats with money) can support it.
This is kind of a cart-and-horse thing we've got going here: which matters most, your dream beach, or high-speed internet? (Your answer: both.)
Well, I think you first need to visit Panama and pick 4 or 5 favorite locations. Then, talk to people who actually live in those locations and ask about internet. E.g., Coronado isn't really remote, but you might like it -- and cable internet is available there. San Carlos has DSL. Bocas has wireless. Pedasi might be getting it. But if you fall in love with, say, Playa Rompio in the middle of the Azuero, you've got a problem.
To find ex-pats on the ground in Panama, your best source at this point is the many Yahoo Groups; just search "panama."
