hi Linda,
could you please elaborate on this. I am wanting to coma and open a photography business - but everything I've been reading makes it seem pretty complicated. Have to hire two full time employees plus invest a set dollar amount...etc
Any info you could provide would be much appreciated. ( I am also from Florida)

I love it. Its inexpensive, i feel like i'm far enough from the states when i visit panama, without being too far.. you know? i defintely enjoy the lifestyle as well. in panama you know the people who live 3 streets down, in the states your lucky if you know who your next door neighboor is.. thats the difference my friends.
We're (spouse & 2 boys 6 & 7) moving to Panama for basically two reasons.
1. My wife is from (and her family is located in) Panama. I want my boys to grow up knowing their family (grandma who "lives in the jungle" is all they talk about...they met her two years ago). A strong family connection for my children is healthy. I have limited family in the USA. My wife grew up firmly rooted in family and has often dreamed about returning to Panama to be near (but not next door...smile) to her family. She has a small network of friends here in the USA...but her heart (and my telephone bill) has been connected to Panama. VOIP is good...land lines are bad (smile)
2. Retirement, pace of life (POL) & cost of living (COL). I've decided to retire a little earlier than originally planned so we can move on to the next chapter in our lives. The POL in the USA that can have a destructive influence on family life, anticipated increases in taxes, COL (sans taxes), and a few other reasons have been drivers in this decision. We'll likely be living somewhere in Chiriqui...perhaps mid-highlands. We plan to purchase 1/2 to 1 hectare of land within driving distance of our boy's school, build a house, do some of the finish work ourselves, et al.
Itchy Feet! LOL! Basically I love to travel!
I'm married to a local and we are considering moving to Panama, since our sons are grown and on their own. Last year was my first trip to panama since 1979. I couldn't believe how big and noisey the city has become. I'm not ready to retire, so I would be looking for work in water system maintenance, or heavy equipment operator.
i voted retire and weather. i've lived in cold winters for 2/3 of my life. now that i'm retiring this year, sunny warm winters. i'm not planning on buy, just rent a small apartment nad live out the rest of my years in peace.
I've never been to Panama so I would like to try for a vacation there lets say for 2 weeks. I would like to spend my time enjoying myself to their wonderful tourist spots.

well i am so disappointed , there was no option on the survey for , the beautiful ladies here LOL . ok the truth , when your a nudist ,cold canada does not cut it LOL
I chose cost of living........but the real reason is I like the people and the new President of Panama. I don't like the new President of the US and where he is trying to take the country. Like someone else, I had planned to move to Costa Rica, but Panama has more to offer.
Who ever looking to buy land let me know, my family have several lots in Chiriqui and Panama with good prices.
I was in Panama in 2001 and just loved the people, culture, climate, food and the cost of living is a little bit better than in the U.S. Plan to move to Panama this year.
Time to get out of here. Bad stuff brewing in Mexico and spreading to the US.
I do all my own stunts.
What stuff?

I thought that war was over and drugs was declared the winner?
Just look at that skyline above.
No joke Ed. Slaughter along the border on the Mexican side and all over Mexico. Police, soldiers, narcos, bystanders being killed daily. Too much to try to explain on here if your are completely unaware. Google: mexico violence, to get a glimpse. Arizona just passed a law making it illegal to be in the US illegally in Arizona. (yeah, I know). Mexicans in the US`are furious and it's getting ready to get violent in some places. To top it off, the president of Mexico came out this morning and denounced the US as racist and says it all the fault of the US.

Costa Rica is getting expensive, in fact many expats are moving from Costa Rica to Panama. Don't forget the President of Panama was educated in

From Wikipedia - Ricardo Martinelli.
In 1973, he graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Arkansas.[3] He later earned a Master of Business Administration degree from the INCAE Business School.
INCAE has a business campus in Costa Rica
sorry about the cut off reply.
Martinelli went to Staunton Military Academy in Virginia and graduated from University of Arkansas. His wife attended a Catholic private school in the states. He truly is trying to move the country forward .

Joannie says it right. We also are tired of the govtmt reach. America, as we knew it, is gone and well on it's way to becoming a socialistic nation. We also are tired of the waste and fraud by our government and the lies coming out of the Whitehouse. We are gearing up to leave it and taking our money with us. We are Patriots but cannot live under the coming dictatorship and cannot stop it from happening. Time to bail...
Hi!
Welcome to the forum!
We have been in PANAMA for going on 6 years now from the Chicago area!!
There are laws that have recently been inacted between U.S. and PANAMA that everyone is watching to see the outcome. Supposedly there is no more secrecy here in PANAMA and the IRS is now here! Check the laws in the states, but if memory serves me right banks will be required to withhold 30% of any money transfered out of the country--I don't think it goes into effect until the end of 2011 or 2012.

Hi Mary and Pat,
Yes, we have been watching this get passed but I understand, it does not go into affect until 2013. We figure we only have a year and a half to sell out and clear out. I hope that my info in correct, otherwise we are going to lose some money. We do not have alot to do to leave as we have scaled down to little-sell our home and kiss our college student bye. The trouble here is that we are going into a heck of a winter and have to wait for spring to put it up for sale. We are already going to take a huge hit by selling as the market is at an all time low.

When will 30% of funds be withheld and why? Can you send a link to what you are referring to?
