The Panama Hat is a stylish, elegant light-colored and light-weight hat made from the plaited leaves of a palm tree. This hat, worn by many and often seen on tourists, is made in Ecuador, not Panama.
While the Oxford English Dictionary cites a use of the term as early as 1834, the Panama Hat became widely associated with Panama during the construction of the Panama Canal. Its popularity exploded when US President Teddy Roosevelt visited the Canal and proudly wore a Panama Hat.
Yeah it does look like a hat for the rich. But it is indeed very stylish, however, I wouldn't wear it on a daily basis. I'm not a big fan of hats...
Anyway, that was a nice and interesting fact. Next time I see someone wearing a Panama Hat I'll be able to identify it and even be able to give a bit of history on it lol.
