    Many charge exorbitant fees

I have had some really bad "rip off" fims I had the unfortunate exeprience with dealing with some well known law firms and told if I publicly complained they would sue me for slander.

Lawyers are a plenty -- be wary of the ones selling real estate or who prominently advertise their fees on their website. Stick to the larger established firms. They are reputable, charge less in the long run, are more ethical, don't get commissions for what they do, and get the work done faster with less hassle and bother on your part. You won't have to do it twice.

I have used a lawyer for the last two and a half years and completed four smooth real estate transactions with her. She has an office in PC, fluent in English, fast, efficient, reliable and honest. Primarily she deals with real estate and corporations / foundations but can refer you to other specialities. I don't think that I can recall a time when she didn't return a phone call / email.

Anyone interested can PM me and I will provide her contact details.

I am getting close to closing on a condo in PC in the next month or so and I would like the name of your lawyer. The project is supposed to be complete in February but realistically it most likely will be later. Any help you can give me would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi!
We have used the same lawyer since 2003 and recommended her for years on our website. Everyone I have sent to her have always given me positive feedback on her professionalism, timely manner to answer emails or phone calls, and fees. She was even written up on www.panama-guide.com as one of the best lawyers by Don Winner.

Send me a PM and I will give you her information.

Mary, I would be grateful to receive the details of a good laywer experienced in immigration. I would also like to know what I should be paying.

There seem to be many lawyers who charge North American rates for gringos - about as much in a hour as an average Panamanian makes in a month.

From Ex pats in Panama I've had comments like "$150 an hour, should be $150 a day, but this person was unnable to recommend a good laywer. The classic was "I used to have a great laywer, but he was assasinated"

    TIA,

    Bill

    Cool Trustworthy Lawyer

    Hi!
We have used Mayra Ruzzi since 2002 and sent a lot of people to her, as recently as last month. She handled our pensionado and other matters of legal nature for us.

Clyde Jenkins from the yahoo group did an article on her also.

I got burned bad with my first business transaction in Panama. Now I have started to have contracts and any important papers reviewed by a 3rd party not involved in the transaction. A lawyer doing work for you is involved in the transaction. Pay for a couple of hours for the review, that keeps your lawyer honest. I just got my first contract reviewed in great detail and I am happy I did it. There was not a single sentence where there wasn't "wishy-washy" language. And in one case a whole paragraph was replaced to give me a better position. Their website is LINK REMOVED BY AUTHOR Most communication is over skype which works great for me.

I now have a foundation charter under review for a foundation I am interested in buying. I am glad I get everything explained. I guess the technical term for what I am doing is call segregation of duties. I wish I'd done that the first time around. One thing I decided is that, no one directly or indirectly associated with the lawyer I am working with can have any function related to the foundation / corporation or contract he is working on for me. That is probably the best protection and discouragement to put things in that might favor that lawyers interest.

Whenever someone new joins and their first posts are an advertisement for another site (like speedy has done a couple times), I get real suspicious.

bicar and becky7474, I am approachable. If you could see the red all over the contract you would understand. I will refrain from sharing any more contacts to not be seen this way. If you want to see what I received, I am more than happy to show it to you. Half of the content of my contract would have had a hard time to stand in a court. Not a minor detail in my book.

I actually was about to post a link to companies in a different post related to self-directed IRA. Since I have not done business with any of them I didn't give links as I wouldn't really know if that is a good idea. By the way, MRWooHoo has my contact information.

You could contact me to find out what kind of a fellow I am. The only reason I joined was to make contacts. So feel free to say hello.

As I mentioned in a response to your private posting to me, I have no problems with you sharing experiences. I find those educational and interesting as well as helpful. However, when an admitted neophyte who just joined the forum is including website links, I smell a rat. You will note that participants with many years experience in Panama and with hundreds of postings to their credit do not make unsolicited recommendations. The only people that make unsolicited recommendations seem to be those who just joined and claim to want to learn something but, in fact, appear to be primarily interested in steering people to certain linked websites. I, for one, automatically exclude those links from any serious consideration on my part.

Half knowledge is a bad adviser. You didn't take me up on my offer to look at the work I received, yet you keep pounding on me after I made a statement that I will not post any more references. Your comment prevented me from posting a comprehensive piece on Panama taxes, rates, exemptions, special tax rates by duration, because I must be afraid that giving credit where credit is due would just get me more of this kind of comments. I am not sure if withholding of valuable information out of fear of being bashed is really helping the community. The same goes for another piece I was working on related to self-directed IRA's. Can't and won't share. So you will be able to sleep better. I just hope the time you will safe on not having to bash me, you will find useful to produce a few articles of your own. What else can i say.

Apologies to the community. If you are interested in the tax information, just send me a personal message.

    Guys, give it a rest.

I've decided not to come down to Panama this year, heading to Arizona instead. The cheap housing there is looking iresistable, and I think stands a better chance of appeciating than Panama. Cost of living is higher than Panama, but cheaper than Canada, and I can drive there so I do not need to buy another car. Maybe I'll do Panama next year.

    Cheers,
    Bill

I am looking to buy an apartment in PC, anybody can recommend a reputable well-known company that is dealing with real estate laws?

    +1

I am new here but I can quickly tell who the givers and takers of the community are.
