A friend of mine recomended listening to spanish online radio broadcasts in order to learn spanish... is this effective?
It is good but it shouldn't be the only thing you do! First learn some grammar and vocabulary, then listen to the radio broadcasts and try to understand them. But if you don't know any Spanish, listening won't be enough because you won't understand anything!!
Only for pronunciation, I think. TV is much better, because you can see the characters' actions while listening to their words. And subtitled movies are best, imho.is this effective
Yeah subbed movies are useful especially if you've seen the movie several times.
As for Spanish radio, it's good for more intermediate users or for beginners who are feeling adventurous. As far as the pronunciation goes for the most part Spanish from different Spanish speaking countries generally has a similar pattern but there's still somewhat of a distinguishable accent especially in some countries. Therefore depending on the country you plan to use it on, it's best to stick with radio stations from there to get a more authentic accent.
there is a web site, lomastv.com. it has small video clips that have english captions. you can make the audio go fast or slow, watch the translation, stop and replay the audio, and click on any word to receive a translation. i've found it really helps in comprehending the language at native speed. it is a subscription of about $10 a month. hope this helps
Wow that's a neat site! Too bad it's not free though..However, they do have some free demos which is good as you can test it out for yourself. I personally won't be using it as I already know Spanish but will take note of it as some of my friends might find it useful.
I like the game feature![]()
I have found that listening to Spanish music really help keep the Spanish you already have. As for learning Spanish, what I like to do is find a song I like, find the lyrics, and translate the lyrics. After that, I'll sing along while looking at the lyrics so that I'm signing the right words.
It's kinda neat to listen to a song and then with the lyrics when you're a non-native speaker. Your brain tries to hear words it knows so you think the singer says one thing but they really say another.
Of course this only works if you have a copy of the song or can find it on say, youtube. Also, to find lyrics, it's sometimes easier to find Spanish lyrics if you type letras musica into your search engine.
If you want to try this out, let me know what kind of music you like in English and I can reccomend stuff you'll probably like in Spanish.
