Animals in Panama

You can find a variety of animals in Panama. There are more than nine hundred (900) species of birds on the mainland and islands of Panama like Quetzal (solitary birds that are poor flyers) and Harpy Eagle (Panama's national bird). The most popular animal that can be seen in Panama is the sloth. You can also see ant eaters, Coati, Capuchin monkeys and Rheanna.

Any more animals you can add to my list?

Wow! 900 species of birds! That's a lot of species. Do the birds stay in Panama year round?

900 species! That is a lot, i would love to see the wildlife in Panama. Like tallman33 said, do they stay in Panama all year round? I do not think i have ever seen a Harpy Eagle either, that would be great to see. I have always wanted to see a sloth in real life aswell, out of all the animals i have ever seen, i have never seen a sloth and i really would like to see one.

I don't even know what a sloth is. What is it?

Are any of the species in Panama at risk of going extinct?

Sloths are monkey like animals, with three huge and sharp claws, but they look quite cute.

From Sloth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Sloths are among the most somnolent animals, sleeping from 15 to 18 hours each day. They are particularly partial to nesting in the crowns of palm trees where they can camouflage as coconuts. They come to the ground, to urinate and defecate, only about once a week."

Here are some photographs so you can get a better idea:

You can check out SLOTHS . ORG : a sleepy sloth for even more photographs of sloths.

From wikipedia: "Although unable to survive outside the tropical rainforests of South and Central America, within that environment sloths are outstandingly successful creatures: they can account for as much as half the total energy consumption and two-thirds of the total terrestrial mammalian biomass in some areas. Of the six species, only one, the Maned Three-toed Sloth, has a classification of "endangered" at present. The ongoing destruction of South America's forests, however, may soon prove a threat to the others."

well i'll definetely go to see landscapes and wildlife there... but searching for 900 bird species should be done just by the ones that are passionate. those monkey like animals, sloths... look quite cute, i'd like to make photos with one of them... and then tell my friend..."i'm going to show you a picture with one of the nicest panamanians..."

The sloth is probably the most laziest animal in the world. It sleeps for a long time each day, i think it is only awake for about 5-8 hours. It Is amazing that an animal can be that lazy and survive.

I would also like to find out whether any of the animals in Panama are becoming extinct, it would be a great shame if there were species dying because Panama tries hard to protect it's country.

It sounds as though the sloth is accurately names.

I suppose sleeping a lot may help it survive, since it probably needs to eat less.

The term "sloth" and the picture above remind me of one of animated movie "Ice-age" which marked the best graphics till date (based on the trio-friendship of sloth, tiger and a mammoth).

I am amazed to know about the 900 species of birds. That is huge! This is my first time to see a sloth too. Are these animals being taken cared of the government?

In reality, the sloth is so lazy that in it's nature to avoid expenditure of energy, it can't help but fall asleep and remain that way for long periods of time. Few animals (if any) have been more aptly named than the sloth. It was undoubtedly named after it's very nature, which is one of the 7 deadly sins. It's name in spanish is a direct translation of the word "lazy" - perezoso. Had it been up to me, I would've named it SLOWTH, a combination of slow movement and laziness.

Left unmentioned to this point are the "big cats" - jaguar, puma (same as cougar or mountain lion) and ocelot - to name three, which are more than likely endangered.

Here is a Harpy's eagle from the Darien rainforest.
This bird was a long way from the camera and I am not that steady of hand.
As I understand it they are endangered with less than 100 left in the wild.

This one time i was driving through the hills of campana in my 4x4, back in the days when there wasnt any paved roads to go up the hill. Anyways, suddenly i hear a bunch of monkeys, it amazed me because there where a lot of them like 15 Titi monkeys jumping from tree to tree, yelling haha it was pretty amazing I will never forget that day, seeing those monkeys interact freely and madly. It was cute.
These other time i was hanging out near the canal.. these was years ago... it was like midnight we were hanging out where we didnt suppose to LOL and suddenly 2 huge Manatis with a baby one came out of the woods towards us.. and im telling you those things where big...its was kind of scary but they didnt do anything besides look at us and us look at them haha..
So far in Panama I have seen, freely: dolphins, flying fish, shark, swam with a barracuda (not kidding!), Guacamayas, Quetzales, Mono Titi, i might have forgotten some.. of course deer and more birds but not so exotic.
