Well I think it would be the Panama Canal which is the main thing I'm gonna look at and probably have a boat ride with it if I visit there. I can't tell much about others since I've never been there.

    "Street Smarts"

The best thing about Panama is the cool sophistication of it's urban population. They (we) are among the sharpest and most urbane citizens in the region...

For me it's swimming in the Carribbean at Isla Grande. It is not overdone with expensive resorts and there's some mighty fine food to be had all at bargain rates.

Also among the best things about Panama - and some would argue that it's the very best thing - is it's geographical location. I presume that's what prompted Simon Bolivar (The Great Liberator) to say - "If the world had to choose a capital, the Isthmus of Panama would be the obvious place for that exalted destiny."

You know, the canal was a major engineering feat, but is not all that impressive to look at. The Welland canal around Niagara falls is probably more impressive - that system raises and lowers boats 200 ft, as opposed to 65 ft. I think more impressive is the 7% of the world's biodiversity which resides in Panama, including the 950 species of birds. Panama is a wildlife paradise.

    Welland vs.Panama canals

    :-)

That had to get a response did'nt it?
I dont think that either are particularly impressive to look at, the impressive thing was the building of them, and certainly the Panama one was built in horrendous conditions.

That's not to understate the importance of the canals either, both to world trade or, in Panama's case, ecomomics.

I would be very dissapointed if I visited Panama to see the canal. It's a thing you do while you are there, for sure, but not a main reason for a trip, there is so much more to Panama than this.

    My opinion, anyway.

Panama is a gorgeous place. Spoiled in some ways but far from ruined. I was born in Florida in the late 50's and lived there for so many years and had the opportunity to watch it become ruined. The Panamanian interior reminds me of Florida in the 60's. A time I yearn for and want to relive. Well, Brevard county does not have the topography as Panama. Panama's mountain ranges are a bonus. The barrio's are different here, but the lifestyle is essentially the same. I am talking about simplicity. The simple life. An uncluttered life. There is time to smell the roses here. And, the environment has not yet become destroyed. Time does not matter here. Most things don't matter. Living matters. Friendships matter. Little things. Like buying old fashioned ocean fish in front of your home from a man with a bike hauling a cart with a cooler full of fish that I have not seen the likes of since I was a kid. This place is a veritable treasure trove of what life used to be like and how it should still be like in the US. God bless Panama.

I remember times like that. Different "K"ontinent but about the same time. The depiction you give is very encouraging for somebody trying to find exactly that. Live and let live has become a scarcity. I'd love my daughter to grow up and experience the values of life, rather than the status of an iPhone.

Thank you for sharing. You just reminded me, why I am doing this.

    Re: best thing about panama??

What I like very much is the Nature in Panama. There are so much beautiful places, landscapes, beaches, hills, mountains, jungles, animals and plants. Really beautiful.
