Need help with my blackberry 9630

Friend of mine gave me his Blackberry 9630, and I plan on using it in Panama. Problem is I need to change the Sim card (think that's all I need to do). Any tech. guy/gal out there who can help me out. Got the following questions:

1- Can I get the Sim card in Panama.
    2- Can I unlocked the 9630 model.
3- What the cost for a Sim card in Panama.
4- Anything else I need to do????

    Would appreciate any feedback.

Re: Need help with my blackberry 9630

I've had a few Blackberry's and have never needed to have it unlocked before putting a different SIM card in it. I'm not sure what a SIM would cost here but I doubt it would be very much, plenty of Mobile Operators here to choose from.

    Hope that helps.

Re: Need help with my blackberry 9630

sims are either 1 or 2 dollars so nothing really. i experienced internet has crazy prices tho! 1 minute of msn or surfing will eat 5 dollars! but theres some threads on here that explain how to get cheaper ones!
ive also had problems that one provider would allow me to send text to some friends abroad and some not, and others the other way around. havent found a chip that i could text all my friends with yet :s im going back in 2 weeks and will continue my experiment :@ will keep u posted!

Thanks Podders, I was told that the current Sim will not work in Panama, and I might have to get the phone unlocked.

So are you saying that I can buy different type of Sim, and depending of the type of Sim I get, I will be able to do different things i.e. phone calls (local/international, texting, e-mail access, and webb browsing. Am I getting things right.

As Jani points out you can purchase SIM cards in Panama for virtually nothing and probably get any type of phone unlocked if necessary. You will be fine with phone calls but sending and receiving international texts can be haphazard. For web browsing, to avoid the high charges better to use a unit that can access free wi fi (for skype etc) or use a computer.

Got you Contrail, I will check to see if the 9630 has that capability. Let me get that clear in my mind, if I can do free browsing, I can also to free e-mail is that correct.

Yes, if you use a wi-fi phone and access a free wi-fi connection you won't be getting a bill for internet use.

yes i meant what contrail pointed out sorry if i wasnt clear. i had abt 3 friends in europe that i could text with using digicell, and abt 3 with masmovil, but not all 6 with the same sim :s

abt those internet charges. are u gonna live there or just vacation? cause they do have plans, contracts, with unlimited internet for $10 a month.

another thing i heard today, was that u need to have a blackberry confiigured when u arrive. not sure what that means tho.

Re: Need help with my blackberry 9630

The best is to use a phone to make phone calls only. Forget about the rest in Panama - text messages disappear all the time here locally.

Use a computer for the rest.

Soon they think they will have 3G networks here and free internet in the city (they claim). They can barely keep the water pressure up and trash off the streets. Not going to happen....

I think Claro has 3G service. The free internet was working on "cinta costera" a few months back. I am not sure if it is still working.

I live a block from there and there has never been a signal (here) and never will be. The Panamanian government will spend 27 million on free internet and it will never work. They simply lack the urge to deliver anything with above a 75 % uptime (99.9 % would be needed for internet), mainly cause they have no clue about anything.

Like I said Ed, the free Internet was working a few month back on "cinta costera". I know because I used it in the parking lot right next to the entrance to "Club de Yates y Pesca". I do not know if it is working now. I do agree with you that anything on the hands of the Panamanian Government will never work.

Get a Mas Movil sim card + some minutes and voice and Internet should work if your phone is unlocked and supports 850 Mhz. Go to a good cell phone store if you need help.

Re: Need help with my blackberry 9630

I have Blackberry 9620 and no problem using it in Panama or the Netherlands.... I used a simcard from movistar (Prepaid) and with movistar you can put internet on your phone for one day a week or a month. I paid 15 dollars for a month. I liked there services especially because of being able to just put internet on your phone for a week without needing to take a data plan for a year. Digicel, Mas Movil also offer internet, both prepaid or with data plans.

I do not mean to hijack the thread but does anyone has any experience with Claro?. I was wondering about their coverage.

If anyone has an Android phone, I encourage you to run "OpenSignalMaps". This will help with mapping where cell signals are available.
