I try to read one or two novels a week; quick ones, like Harry Potter--which despite being around 700 pages, took about 2.5 days--or amazingly slow ones, like Umberto Eco's Baudolino ( Amazon.com: Baudolino: Books: Umberto Eco,William Weaver,) which despite not being that long, is taking me a record 3 months. I just can't seem to read more than 30 pages at any given time without wanting to read something else.
I get antsy and a little weird if I can't read a book; 1000 pages a week is normal, plus whatever I read on the computer.
Latest to go down:
High Fidelity by Nick Hornby Amazon.com: High Fidelity: A Novel: Books: Nick Hornby
Nobel House by James Clavell Amazon.com: Noble House: Books: James Clavell
what matters most is how well you walk through fire by Charles Bukowski Amazon.com: What Matters Most is How Well You Walk Through the Fire: Books: Charles Bukowski
And a few chew-through Star Wars books--they are totally candy to me!!
Cheers.

Two novels a week is a lot, but that's good. Reading is a very healthy hobby.

I was like that too, but about a year ago I needed to read some books to make a test to get a job position, and I started to like reading

I hardly ever read books, however i do read alot of text on the Internet and i also type alot so i do keep my brain active. I just do not like reading novels, i find them boring and i would rather be doing something else more important, interesting or fun to be honest. I did read a bit while i was at school, i managed to read one of J.R. Tolkien's 'Lord Of The Rings' books but that was very confusing to me with made-up language and whatnot.

How do you like Jack Kerouac? I read On The Road. It interested me, but the story seems to be lacking any significant drama or turmoil.

That was rather the point of 'On The Road.' It was the perfect example of Beat writing; the glide of the roads before the interstate system, the epic simplicity of drifting around the country after the years of WWII. It was a tale of the adventures of travel, rather than any serious dramatic elements--as you pointed out.
This month's 'New Yorker' has a lovely article about the 50th anniversary of its publication and its subsequent impact on the modern American novel, with interesting bits about Kerouac and Neal Cassady. Check it out!
Of course, as much as I've dabbled in rather pompous-sounding literary criticism, I still like all the 'Star Wars' books.
Cheers.

I love reading.. when I was younger (in my teens) I never read any novels of any kind, I always thought I could read novels when I'm 60, but when I was 21 I developed a pure passion of gobbling up any classical novel (by authors like Charles Dickens, Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, Frances Hodgson Burnett). It was quite an addiction but one I didn't want to get rid off.
You know that feeling when you're in what you believe to be in the most horrid or most interesting part of a book, and someone disturbs you and you get that sudden feeling of wanting to smash the disturber's head against the wall? I knew then and there that reading a great book was more exiting than watching any movie, or eating chocolate with almond chunks.
I also must confess that I read any book that I could get by Agatha Christie (she wrote about 80). Her invention of the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot is ingenious... and he is so funny! Like a Charlie Chaplin and Sherlock Holmes in one person.

Yup, I know exactly what you mean about being bothered while reading something intense. About 10 yrs ago, I finally made peace with the fact that if I put down the book for a minute, I wouldn't miss anything...that level of tension would still be there after I walked the dogs, or made dinner. And as much as I enjoy a great movie, or an excellent cartoon--there is just nothing more transporting than a richly crafted story.
Cheers.
