Being a cash grain farmer in Wisconsin and totally disliking putting up with the cold and snow,I am curious if anyone here has any ideas about what the potential would be to start a farming business in Panama. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Its hard to say how well you would do . There would be plenty of cheap labor to hire . The rains come often enough that water irrigation should not be a issue or needed . There really is not a long dry season in Panama and I would think that a crop that needs lots of moisture might do well . Since you are a farmer and know much more than I ever will about crops ,I would study the rain amounts and days of sun for the different areas . Boquete might be a good area or David as they grow lots of flowers commercially there .
Raising flowers would be new too me although now that the subject came up it dawned on me that a lot of flowers are imported from that area during the winter. I was thinking more conventional crops could produced in sizeable fields.
Not being familiar with the topography and where the main agricultural producing are located in a reasonable driving distance from a burb of Panama city. Although I do like the country lifestyle I really do not care to live in the boonies either.
Here is a link to maps of Panama which were put up by a Panama Forum member several months ago. The bottom map shows the agriculture and commercial locations in Panama. Maps of Panama, Countrymap, Citymap, Canalmap, Regionmap
From this you can see some of the agricultural activities coffee, bananas, sugarcane etc. This may give you a bit of an idea of farming areas and what is traditionally grown there extensively. I understand that there are many other crops grown there. I did a search in Wikipedia and this link gives a number of other links regarding some of the agricultural activites. Google gives a number of links too when you search "Panama Agriculture" including this link Panama - AGRICULTURE
