    Investing in the stock market

With concerns about increasing inflation as the USD falls in value and as more and more money is printed, I'm considering investing in the stock market.

Does anyone know a good website where I could deal online ? Does not being a resident of the US or the UK make much difference ?

    Thank you for your help,

    Maurice

I don't understand your question.... you are looking for an online stock broker to trade stocks in?

to properly answer your question I need to know which country you want the broker to be in, and what is your nationality or country of residency?

I will tell you why this is important after...

Thank you for replying and sorry for not being so clear.

I am looking for a company that has a presence online where I can trade stocks, funds etc. on the stock market. I don't need someone to give me advice, I just need the means to be able to buy and sell. Ideally I would like the company to deal with USD, so stocks on the DOW and NASDAQ would be fine.

Regarding residency, I'd like to base myself in Panama.

So, what do you suggest ?

What is your residency for tax purposes? Panama? Were are you normally a resident of? Are you concerned with paying taxes on your stock gains to your home country of residency?

It will help me to simplify my answer...

I have to go along with yaya on this one, do yourself a favor and stay out of the stock market. I am attaching a link to my favorite financial website ATimes.com. There is a good article there you may want to read before hopping into stocks: Asia Times Online :: Asian news and current affairs. If you do check out the website make sure to look at "The Mighty Mogambo Guru". Here is a link to his latest article: Asia Times Online :: Asian news and current affairs. Just an fyi, I found there is a place that sells bullion in Panama.

Hmmm...I've made 22% this year (2009) in the US stock market.
(Now, granted, in 2008 my total portfolio dropped about 28%...)

    Nice comments

Thank you everyone for your comments. All ideas are always very welcome.

Yaya, you might well be right. However, I feel that holding a pocket full of dollars is one outlook, and perhaps there are many others too. I reckon that the cash option is a bit of a risk in today`s climate and perhaps I`m more cautious. Or perhaps I just enjoy being more in control of my dosh. Or perhaps the stock market appeals as a bigger game. Anyway, it`s an avenue I`d like to explore.

Thank you also MRWOOHOO and BEL-AIR for your web links. I`ll have a look at them when I have a bit more spare time. IN the meanwhile, let me explain that although I`m British, I`m looking at being a resident in Panama. I have heard that deals can be made online without the need to pop into a fixed office, and that`s really what I`m looking for. Surely they would have the best prices too if their overheads such as rent are kept low, wouldn`t they ?

Thank you all once again and I look forward to your comments.

If you make Panama your new home, and are no longer a resident of England for tax purposes you have a good opportunity...

you know were the best broker in the world to invest your money?

    In the usa.....

Why? coz if you are from a country that does not charge taxes on it's citizens offshore income, [most non west countries] you can invest in USA brokers tax free....... Since neither country will tax you.... But you have to fill out a foreigner brokers forms.... Alot of brokers in the usa no commissions at all now, or are almost free.

So when Obama says the tax havens created all this mess as a scape ghoat, he forgot to mention, that the biggest tax haven in the world is the USA for non nationals..... not Panama or Cayman islands...

so use Panama or one of 140 other countries in the world that have no tax as offshore income, tell the brits you are no longer a resident of england, and [magic] you can now invest tax free in the USA.....

[IF YOU ARE A USA CITIZEN, YOU CANNOT DO THIS, AS YOU ARE TAXED ON WORLD INCOME, REGARDLESS OF WERE YOU LIVE]

I am invested in oil and silver, and I trade also...

Excellent. This is what I was hoping to hear.

Could you recommend such a US financial services provider which has the facility to buy/sell shares and look at portfolios online.

    Thanks for your help.

You are referring to discount brokers to do online trades?

If so I will give you a list of brokers that charge 0$ per trade to $9.99 per trade regardless of how many shares you trade... So dirt Cheap..

Also these brokers all allowed and are licensed to do business with folks offshore...

I just in Thailand now, and going out with the guys for some fun in the sun ...

But I will post the names in the next day or so of the brokers... you can also pm me and I can help you with forms and how to do it all, I will walk you through the whole thing....

Yes, I think that's exactly what I'm looking for.

Will they hold the portfolio ? And can we deal online ?

I'm really looking forward to seeing the list.

Have fun in Thailand - those are some of the very best beaches in the world. You've chosen an excellent place for fun in the sun.
