La Critica - It is estimated that about 21,000 Panamanians are HIV positive and don't know it, according to the Specialized Unit of Attention to Persons who are HIV Positive or who have AIDS, of the Office of the Ombudsman, Maité Cisneros. He said that to date there are 9,014 registered AIDS cases in Panama resulting in 6,223 deaths. Of those 4,730 were men and 1,493 were women, and the greatest morbidity occurring among those between 15 - 44 years of age. According to Cisneros, there has been a worrisome increase among the number of young people infected by the virus, and that there is much to do to educate the population.

Se estima que unos 21 mil panameños son portadores del virus VIH y lo desconocen por temor a hacerse la prueba, alertó la Unidad Especializada de Atención a las Personas con VIH o SIDA de la Defensoría del Pueblo, Maité Cisneros.
Destacó la funcionaria que a la fecha existe en Panamá un registro de 9 mil 014 casos de esta terrible enfermedad, con 6 mil defunciones, de las cuales 4 mil 730 fueron hombres y mil 493 eran mujeres, con mayor morbilidad entre los 15 y 44 años.
Según Cisneros, ha habido un incremento preocupante entre los jóvenes infectados por el virus, lo que nos presenta como una sociedad en un estado de letargo y con mucho por hacer en esta materia.
