Colon - a good investment?

Hello all,
First post here, hoping to meet some interesting people!

Myself & my partner are considering investing in a share of a hotel complex in Colon. Possibilities seem strong, with the canal work & the general level of interest in Panama at the moment.

Does anyone have any experience of buying in this area, or buying into this type of scheme (basically, you buy 1 or more apartments in the hotel & receive a share of profits, and hopefully some capital appreciation).

Or indeed, if anyone has any general information which they think might be useful to me, I'd be delighted to read it!

Many thanks in advance.
Jock

I would look into the history and see if other investors have made money buying apartments there before. Do they resell for the same price?

You're right of course.
But this is a new venture (renovation of existing buildings from different use) and I can't find much else to compare it to in the area.

I feel that in the short term at least the hotel should do well, but from a capital appreciation point of view, it's hard to find comparisons.

Any input welcome!

Do you have access to the balance sheets and other financial statements. What's the bottom line?

Since it's a new venture, there are no balance sheets.

The projected yields are, unsurprisingly, healthy, due in the main to the upcoming canal work.
Whilst I'd be fairly optimistic this would bear out in the short term, I'm looking for general info on the area to help with my judgement on the longer term prospects.

Generally, I just spread my investments out. There's so many variables in any given investment that even if it seems good it could turn out to be a loser. If you spread your bets, you can afford to lose some as long as you win more than you lose.

Thanks guys.

Whilst I was looking at a fairly small investment here, I sure don't want to be throwing money away.
I've read very negative opinions about the Colon area here & on other forums. I'm guessing that the canal work is a main driver in building this project at all & may only be a runner for short term yields.

Anyway, I'll have a think about whether to spend the time going over to have a good look at the area.
Thanks for all your help.

Good luck, Jock. I'm sure you'll do fine with your investments, given how much throught you put into them.

From what I have heard Colon is not really a touristy kind of place although that may be changing. Some people in the government have put allot of money into it recently.

Thanks again to all who've taken the trouble to post.

My homework has continued & I've been pretty much put off Colon in general, but certainly not Panama. The David area looks interesting, I'll do some more homework there.

What are you going to be investing in instead?

Possibly Best Western David. Seems to have a good location.

Lots of digging to do first though. Any insights welcome.
