    Just returned form Bocas !

Its been about a year since we , My wife and I , vacationed at our home in Bocas . Talk about changes ! More hotels are going up and they do not have the water, sewer or Electric to handle it . Water was only on for 2 hours a day . I do not know how the hotels can even attract customers . Cost have climbed a little but overall it is still a great deal . Airport has been redesigned but I do not think it is any better than before . They really need to fix the bathrooms as they were a joke . We were there 7 weeks and really enjoyed the change from the states ,but we very seldom left our home on Bastimentos . Weather was about as good as it gets . We are now planning on spending every March /April there from now on .
They need to get their act together and clean up the trash if they really want to be seriously considered a vacation spot .
Fishing was quite good and we enjoyed Coconut husk "Smoked fish" that was good as any I have ever tasted . It well may become my new pass time . I intend to go back armed with proper fishing tackle to take on the Trapon that made fun of me . What beautiful fighting fish . The dolpins put on quite a show for us also .
With that being said we are seriously considering just packing it all in and moving full time to Bocas . 99% of the time will be spent on our island of Bastimentos when we are in Bocas and our house is far enough away from the town of Bastimentos that we have excellent privacy.
The wife put up a couple humming bird feeders and the results were amazing . Before we left she could walk up and pet the hummingbirds on their little chest . Going to try and get back down in Sept for a short time .

So there you go ! Thats my report ! Stop by if you get a chance !

Please share how one goes about smoking fish in a coconut husk. That sounds absolutely great.

I wish I could tell you how they did it , but the turth is my caretaker smoked the fish at his caretakers home on my property and then brought the fish over to us .
The fish have a very slight coconut scent and were perfectly smoked . He did tell me they would last about 4 days done this way . I assume the coconut husk were used in place of wood as a smoking source . I do know that the fish were rubbed in salt before smoking . I'll try to get a preparation and cooking method posted as soon as I know more .

interested in building a home in Bocas

    Hello, Im Jonathan

Bastimentos seems beautiful. I should be there in the middle of Jan.
Should I put off my trip til Feb. because of the rain?

I am looking for a few acres to build a home. I am from Hawaii, just too expensive.

    Aloha
    Thanks

Hi Jonathon, you should be fine come mid Jan. Compared to Hawaii, almost everything is a bargain.

Honestly ??? If you can wait until Feb it should be much better timing for you .The rainy season will still be going strong in Jan . The waves get very big in the channel during Dec/Jan .
You should find lots of land avalible ,depending on how far out you want to be on Bastimentos . I personally like being where I am at as it is close to Bocas Town (2 Miles) , on the channel side of the island, and not in Old Bank . STAY AWAY FROM THE OCEAN SIDE !!! Good luck ! You can always PM me for more input too.

This post is somewhat dated, but do you still own/live on Bastimentos. I am visiting in Sept. and looking at a property near the tip of Old Bank. I am concerned about some of the comments I have read about security/safety around locals. Any truth to this and how have your experiences been.
