80 Houses Destroyed Between Punta Peņa and Rambala
By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Peace Corps volunteer Whitney Golob has been working with the community of Oriente de Punta Peņa in Bocas del Toro for about a year. Her cellular telephone service was just restored this morning. She reports approximately 80 houses have been destroyed in her area, all those that were near the river between Punta Peņa (8.92°N 82.18°W) and Rambala down towards the coast. She said "the river got really big, the fincas are ruined, and crops that were planted have all been destroyed." According to the people in her community she can get as far as Almirante by bus if she wanted to, but at this point she has been in contact with "her boss" who works for Peace Corps/Panama Country Director Peter Redmond and her instructions are to remain where she is until further notice. She confirmed that the road to David has been washed out in at least four places and that landslides have blocked the road in as many as one hundred locations.
